The Urban areas usually have the highest potential for floods, but that does not mean the urban areas are the only areas that will be affected. Everyone should know how to be prepared for floods as they are the “most costly natural disasters in terms of property damage.”

Tips to be protected and prevent flooding

Build or renovate homes that are more likely to withstand a flood

Elevation is always better when it comes to flooding as floods usually occur in low-lying areas. Look into raising home whether it be on stilts or on a raised platform. Home owners could also look into waterproof walls. Flood resistant materials can be used when building homes. Ensure to seal and cover cracks in foundation.

Plant trees and bushes around the home

Trees, plants and bushes help to improve your drainage system. Plant roots help soak up water with any other drainage system that the house and yard may have. Lastly trees and plants can help keep the water away from your home.

Another great way to be prepared is to have Flood Insurance.

Sometimes all the preventative measures taken just are not enough and you get property damage anyway. Having insurance is a way to ensure that you are covered for any damage that was made to the property. Insurance is a small price to pay for your protection.
