Often the volume or surface area of trees may be required. In my experience many new developments and projects have to result in a ZERO canopy loss, so as trees are removed the equivalent canopy has to be planted. Depending on the criteria requested the calculation can be either volume or surface area. To simplify the process I produced a simple online calculator for the typical tree shapes we encounter. Do consider using a combination for some trees or rotating the shape, ie cone vs vase shaped tree.
The 5 basic shapes of trees are shown below, Simply input the required data, click the calculate button and read the result. With the domed tree shape the calculator does not include the underside area of the tree as often it is not foliated. Trees of this form can be poincianas, some ficus and when you are beneath the tree and look up you'll see the branches.
