I answered no spurs on live/removals only.
Some would say, depends how much time/money is on the tree.
Even then, very un-professional it will probably come back on you.

i would say it depends on the circumstances & species specifically, some people have argued that a few spike marks are the equiv of a big chainsaw cut, i personaly dont wear spikes unless its abslutly nec, (iv used them on rescues) fact is is the nature and angle of a downwards gaff wound s very difficult for the tree to heal over & creates the perfect entrance point for a pest or pathogen esp the lower on the trunk it is, beyond that leaving unsightly gaff marks on a customers tree is plain unprofessional, isnt our job to care for trees? thin barked trees are obviously less protected & much more vunerable to contusion, but we have evergreens in oregon that have such thick furrowed corky bark sometimes over 4" thick, u couldnt even reach the cambium layer if you tried, the pseudotsuga menziesii (doug fir) & sequoiadendron gigantium (giant sequoia) are both very well insulated trees to name a couple that we work on here, they grow with stretches of straight trunk for 80' even more, the amount of time you would spend putting into riggin all the hardwear up & everything in putting a line up to ascend w jumars, you could have climbed the tree (slightly invasively) three times & saved the frustation of using all that fancy gear, id say it boils down to which species can handle the spikes wo causing damage, and in circumstances which it would be much less safe or unethical to climb wo them.

I quit subcontracting to one man whom I saw using a ladder to 20' to hide the gouges.

Walking through a new clients garden I noticed a telltale pattern on a Euc, and asked the client if any work had been done on the tree, she replied "not in the two years we have been here.."

There was no apparent wound wood around the scars, will keep an eye on it.

Just can't believe someone would do that to prune two 70mm limbs at 5m..

I really like the position of the tap too!

Only time the spurs come out of the bag is when the tree is getting removed.

Mike
