I have been working my ass off. I have waited like 4 years for the storms to bust this town up. I call it a wake up call. The ole Queensland beautiful one day perfect the next was true for about 3 years. Hardly a day lost to rain, storms WTF are they. Then came drought, water restrictions etc and frankly anything outside fo the aircond home and Plasma 400" screen didn't matter a crapper to the average "what's a tree" bloke in this town. Well, WHAM BAM THANK YOU MAAM, mother nature made a few realise the world isn't about their internet, shares, plasma screen or picket fence .... perfect the next day become STORMS EVERY DAY, even today as I type we GOT HAMMERED. So the damage made many tunnel visioned suburbanites realise that in their peripheral vision is trees .... ![]() Yeah, those things that seemed to have disappeared for 4 years are back ... WITH A VENGEANCE! ![]() These pissed off, neglected, abused and untrained trees most likely to BANG THE BRAIN a wake up call, "HELLO WE'RE BACK" is what you might think they said but .......................... what I here is my brain saying "I TOLD YOU SO" ![]() Tree care isn't seasonal, doesn't run on wet/dry periods, doesn't care what your party plans are it's an ever present constant. Brisbane received it's wake up call, sadly many forward it onto the insurance companies but I got something planned for you types, called " I TOLD YOU SO" Ignore it then claim insurance! The day is coming where YOU WONT BE INSURED if the tree displayed clear VTA symptoms of failure.

Heya, I've been "converting my wood into firewood for some time now as well. However, at the moment im in Texas. My grandpa isnt doing so well so 13 of us in the family all came out to see him and get together for a week. As far as work goes, just been splitting like crazy. Finished about 8 cords since the season started, and I've sold off about 5, but have another 4 or 5 to process. I continually "harvest" from the forest to keep things going, and always wood that's already dead and seasoned but not rotted. Which, isn't always that easy. lol. The other work calls have dwindled a bit, but I've still been doing alot of palms lately. |

Hello Therrin, Things have come to a screeching halt for me here in Denver. There is still some work in the mountains, removing beetle killed trees. Other than that very slow. I know how Ekka feels about ISA certifications. But how do you all feel about TCIA certifications? The tree service industry in Denver is fairly progressive as far as protecting trees, the major metro cities require tree companies to pass a written and physical test to apply for a business license. In lieu of the tests you can seek ISA certification, so we did that and as most of you know it was not very difficult. Are there any benefits to TCIA certification? Where do you all feel like the industry is going as far as regulation? (Both in the US and other countries) Is that a good thing? Are municipalities pursuing the right regulations? Will it reduce our insurance? Just thinking out loud. Thanks for the input. Carry on. How are things with you Therrin? Brent Last edited by sawtooth ID; 30th November 2008 at 03:19 PM. Reason: typo |

Hmm been pretty quiet out this way, only the odd tree removel and some pruning. Lucky I do garden work it's the only thing keeping us afloat, but the old dears are nice. Spent three nights out at Bollon QLD, doing garden work for a lady, big garden three 12.5 hour days. Sort of a full week this week, nothing next week yet at all. might take it off and build our BBQ area before Christmas. No time off thought as last year a good storm went throught and I was the only person willing to work any day.I'm praying for a big storm again. Lost alot of quotes to my beloved localily, government funded, ,organization. Ekka knows who I'm on about.Been busy with our new arrival though, just makes coming home even better every day.

We're still busy working on storm damage. Like Ekka said people have neglected trees for decades and bought frivilous (sp?) things and this year we had 2 major storms and a hurricane. Still having fond memories of jobs completed/checks cashed/extravagant things bought. Best year ever. Trees are on everyone's minds as it is not the storm itself that defines the devastation but rather the trees falling on things that is the issue. Weather has predictably slowed our production somewhat and within a week it went from 70 degrees to 30 degrees f working temps. Clothes piled up everywhere......in the trucks on the floors on the stairs etc., as they are put on and taken off as the day warms up and the body warms up. Been selling firewood slowly as last year it sold out in Nov. Figured I was selling it too cheap. Will sell it all over the winter but this year will make much more on about the same amount of wood. None of that small quantity sale that just is annoying and not profitable. We planted a whole $hitload of trees last week with the Dingo and stumpgrinder cutting the holes that made some big bucks. Trying to think of what to do different next year to be more profitable while trying to read as much as time permits to "do the right thing" whenever possible. Cheers |

TV, I'd try to stretch my firewood sales out more, except that at the moment the folks who own the ranch where I live want the area I'm using to plant a garden, so they set an end-date for when I have to have all of the wood out of there. That's roughly 3 weeks for now. So at the moment I'm trying to sell as much as I can, and figure out where to move the rest of it too that isnt too far away cuz I dont want to lose money on moving it around much. I may move my firewood operation to a friend's property up in Lake Hughes though, we're still talking about it so I'll have to see how it goes. Mmmm... come to think of it, I brought a ton of pictures out here to gma and gpa's place to show them "what I do" and in the mix are all of my palm pictures, I'll have to edit some up and post them while I'm here. |

First day of December and it was 50oF in Park City today! (global warming?). Can't ski without hitting a rock so I went for a 6.0 hr mtn bike ride today, could be the last ride of the year because the forecast is snow tomorrow night. Finally.

Just tickin' over here. I do more cherry picker hire than my own tree work now Just had the 75' Abbey rebuilt and working the 78' GMJ most days. When it's slow I resort to removing stinkin' Cocos palms. There are always plenty of them to do. Did a nice removal of a Forest Red Gum (Euc Teretecornis) last week with 60 tonne all terrain crane, that was a bit of fun. Doin another at the same site tomorrow, Grey Box ([I]Euc Mollucana). Railway 33kv line clearance friday.

Wasatch is so beautiful--do they still have the 100-mile run in the summer? "Trying to think of what to do different next year to be more profitable while trying to read as much as time permits to "do the right thing" whenever possible." Sounds like a plan, Dave. You got em in the right order. Yes an efficient rapist best not brag about bending the rules that much. How about pruning storm-damaged trees? Better money in that long-term. |

AJ, open the picture up in MS Paint, click on "Image", then "stretch/skew" and type in the percentages you want and it'll reduce the size of the picture accordingly. The ones I take with the camera usually turn out HUGE on the computer so I reduce them to a value of 15%/15% |

PC arbo, Park City is good living friend. I worked at Snowbird for 4 years and would escape to PC when the Zion Curtain became too oppressive in Sandy. And the Mtn Biking is not too shabby either. I love the "Ant Farm", smooth and fast. Have a good winter. |

Hello treeworlders, I'm very busy at the moment. Unfortunatly not with cutting firewood or cleaning up stormdamage. I'm busy doing dekswork. But I realy shouldn't complain because it's my own choice. I changed jobs. From working as an arborist to working as a tree-technical advisor. Because of this job change and me buying a new house I haven't been posting as much as I wanted. Hope things slow down next year and I can finaly get some shot of my burls and show them to Leifr. |

Just found the thread. At my desk trying to find time to clean 40 more palms before Christmas. Tree work is slow, but palm cleaning is steady. Palms get dangerous and ugly if you don't clean them every four months. For now, my clients have found the money to keep cleaning them on that schedule. |
