Thanks Ekka for the advise.......perhaps it's a waste of time trying to contain such a beautiful tree anyway. What considerations would you make to planting it into a high corner of the yard where it will be framed by a solid privacy wall ? cynrhouse |

Select the right sized tree for the location. If a location can take a 6m tall tree and 6m wide canopy then from that you work backwards to suitable sized trees matched to soil/climate positioned correctly.

We'll got quite a few things go"in. I'm about to do alot of firewood with New Zealand winter season on its way. I've just ben milling alot of timber up for a few months. I did a large Job for the Airforce here in Auckland in April May of last year. We removed some large Macrocarpa and some of it was way to good to turn into firewood so that kept me goin for the rest of the year pretty much. It's been great not having to climb my ass off constantly and then get to every quote I can, just to make ends meet. The whole client contact thing gets a little (a lot) overwhelming somtimes. But I've had a nice break over Christmas, done alot of Kayak fishing, almost got tossed out by a whale... that was pretty cool. I've just been asked to do a tree survey for a school. I recently did one for the airforce which had 2500 trees of all shapes and sizes. I think the school will only have about 100 but at least there will be regular maintenance work involved. Maybe one day I can afford to hire a decent climber and I can go sailing/fishing alot more often. I've got these two viking fishing kayaks that I am converting into a sailing/fishing catamaran or maybe a trimaran I'm not sure yet.... Anyhow the reason I found this site...... I'm removing/quoteing the removal of a Norfolk Pine about seven stories tall and 1200 in diameter at the bottom I want to remove it in sections (obviously) but leaving the branches on so I need to calculate sections approximately 800kg for each peice. I'll go up and mark it all out and maybe strop it all out before the chopper arrives.....$2000 plus sales tax per hour. I saw the weight table provided from the Sherril site. I'm assuming thats in pounds not kilograms? Ps thanks for the interest I hope I can make contribution, this looks like a fun site. |

Took out a small tree pushing on the phone and cable lines about a week ago. Went and did another quote for a tree that came down partially in a storm and it's still kinda buckled and half-connected. Big mess... guy asked how much, I said $850. He said "WHAT?? how about 250?" I laughed, he didnt think it was funny. I told him that I wasnt interested in paying out of my own pocket to take his tree down, then I left. I think he finally understood when I was heading out, I'll let him sit on it for a while. He gave me that line "I've got a chainsaw so I'll just work on it myself". pfffft. dumbass. |

$850 to $250 is a serious drop .... $250 in this day and age to get anything done around the home is near impossible.... for legitimate businesses.

250 bucks, when i was a mechanic that would get the oil changed, tranny fluid and filter changed if manual the gear lube changed, the rear gear grease changed, plugs and wires changed and the air filter cleaned, all of that would take me maybe an hour ,about 100 bucks for that parts.150 labour.

Yes, I think most know what you're on about. However in the society of political correctness and being over shadowed by big brother it's sometimes best left unsaid. You know Q ... like the door knockers, some try to twist it so we're the villains dobbing them in. Some try to twist it that the aliens in USA are entitled to be there etc. You know, once a few years ago a guy over there shot bit of a video of Mexicans who would sit, sleep, shit and piss on the side of the road waiting for work. He did a drive by showing how they just hang around hoping some-one pulls up and offers work. This is how some tree crews get their workers DAILY! I pimped that video up with a sound track, added some interest by making a competition out of it ... counting the Mexican's on the roadside ... how many. Was tough because he shot it covert like out of a pic cam. Well did the Yanks GO OFF! I was overnight a racist, Mexican hater, bla bla bla ... this is what I think and here's the video. ![]() 6mb WMV How many Mexicans? What was some-one else saying ... using the word "biner" is racist. Bugger me!

My daughter works in a restaurant and the new cook was quoted on something said he replied...."it doesn't matter because this isn't America anymore this is now Mexico". If I was working in that kitchen might have been some fireworks. Since she would prob. lose her job if I responded, well, we just let that one go...for now. | |

Some people have no idea what things cost. It is very easy to do stuff too cheap just because you want to make the customer happy. Sometimes the customer is very adept at persuading you to make them happy. You know the ones, always trying to renegoiate the price after the job has started, offering quick cash and adding in bits and peices here and there as the work progresses haggleing over every little thing. I just throw those bastards through the chipper these days..... 12 inches of loving fury...... Waaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrpppp!!!! |

Not to much at the moment. The missus (who works in a bank) was held up just before new years eve and was a fair bit shaken from it so we have been take'n it easy. Fortunately the clown who held up the bank was taken out in the carpark by a heap of locals. I reckon they got a few kicks in before the coppers arrived. Booked a trip to sunny Qld after that ill be back into it.

Hope they get done good and proper!! Finally feel like i've recovered from my holiday, a week after being back at work. Far too much driving and partying for me! ![]() Had some good jobs this week, felled 3 large pines (nearly got bowled by top of tree as it lined us up on its way over), thinned and lift a oak, few other rather insignificant jobs in comparison. easing back into it. |

Ahahahaha, counting mexicans! Ekka, if you did that on the street corners around here, or especially the Home Depot and Lowe's hardware stores, there's clumps of 10 to 30 of them at a time. Yeah the "biner" thing was something they brought up for racial awareness and sensitivity up at the Conference center I do contract work for. You've gotta say "Carabiner" now. I forgot that I had posted about that. I'm trying my damndest to get this firewood sold! Hit up craigslist and recycler.com and I seem to be right in the middle of the price range. Some of those guys (lol), omg, they want like $250 for a cord of PINE, with delivery extra! |

The people who own the ranch where I live want the weeds taken care of. That'd be a TON of pulling... So, I'm thinking about finding a living lawnmower. ![]() What's better for eating down weeds, a sheep or a goat? |

I know goats will eat practically anything, I think sheep prefer short vegatation. Carry on, the Ozzie's should know about sheep! Last edited by TreeDimensional; 12th January 2009 at 09:54 AM. Reason: Sp |
