Have worked for a large local company today -had a large rowan to take down a siccamore to deadwood and a horse chestnut to crownlift. Good bunch of lads and plenty of large toys in the workshop. Loving the Mogs here in the U.K! |

We are currrently trying to wrap up a small clearing project for a new high-end subdivision (housing). We're also chasing down quite a bit of residentials, and have a couple different interesting sycamore's in the works, one possibly requiring/benefiting from the use of a crane, and the other requiring some speedlining. I just bought a new Sequioa last month and am loving it! |

Ey Therrin! Currently in the design phase for a sustainable home. Probably a first in my country (Philippines) if all goes according to plan. Hard though, as we don't have that many standards to use as a guide (not like LEED, etc.). So research research research. Most of the green books I had to source from offshore....none here at all. Just finished assessing the lot's vegetation and came across a particular tree that I can't seem to identify...

Gogo fail storms! Stormyish during the night, big winds and rain but no branches down. Mid morning this flash storm hits, lasted maybe 20 minutes while we hid in our trucks, after that the calls started coming in with branches down everywhere, even got half a Eucalyptus down in Mill Park. Shame we didn't get around to doing wires today though.

I certainly sharpen my climbing saw, and the mid range saw, but the large Husqvarna I use - the few times i do, I usually get it sharpened. But it depends on what I am doing - eg a job 100 km or more from home - i'll sharpen it; but if I hit a stone in the tree -- yep I have hit stones buried in tree trunks, or steel etc -- I get the shop to do the sharpening, |

Back in my old job we always had the groundie sharpen everything, including the Stihl 88 with its stupidly large bar. All by hand with a file, none of these fancy electronic gizmo's.

My city is trying to become a United States Tree City! Our Mayor has pledged to plant 5000 trees over the next 5 years. Our gymnastics school is going to join the tree planting initiative and pledge to plant at least 1 tree for every student, our initial goal (that's 200 trees)! I was wondering if anyone knows what organization might give away tree seedlings? Mona Lisa |

Hello Mona Lisa Can't help you with tree organization -- but you want to plant as many different species as possible. In time insects and diseases will invade your site, and the more families of trees you have, the less impact any one disease or insect is likely to have. There are some broad band insects and diseases that you can't do much about. BUt education among the students, the vulnerability of trees - to drought, compaction, vandalism, bark stripping, branch breaking -- and the wonderful contributions trees make to your school property will help make your project a success. I hope your project succeeds. |

Hello Tree Geek Quote:
![]() I could make some suggestions, but I am pretty sure you already know them. It is more of an attitude change. EG - Rather than saying you have to get rid of the grass (which will never happen) for the trees to grow, you need to trim the tree so both will thrive. You need to focus on the benefit of shade in mid day to early afternoon, so the grass won't be scorched, and the AC isn't working so hard, not as many waterings are needed and the grass will still look good. In time you need to plant the suggestion of other ground covers that still look good, and give the client more free time (ie less grass cutting, fertilizing, trimming...). After all, grass is one of the highest maintenance ground covers around. Focus on the benefits of trees, how the client will benefit following your advice, and how his high investment in the lawn will continue to thrive and make his property look good, and feed his ego that he made the right decision in buying and keeping the property, and entrusting you for advice. Getting anybody to go along with your advice is basically answered by -- What is in it for them? How will they benefit? How can they get what they want (usually for cheap)? And you are the last consideration, or sometimes the one after the last. | |

Mona Lisa - I agree with Apocalypsse. Every student should plant their own tree. They will learn first hand what is needed, and if they take pride in their tree, they should help look after it. Be certain to research the trees, their growth habit, what they need, and be sure to plant them far enough apart. You hardly want to go to all this trouble, and have most of them die from over-competition. |

Having a very quiet week this week, only worked a half day skimming off some gravel off a driveway ready for some new stuff to go down. Went for a walk in Holyrood park yesterday and made my way up and down the five hills enjoying the varying views of Edinburgh. Loving the sunshine and warmer weather. Hopefully got some good jobs coming up in the next few weeks with a large company I have recently been working with. ![]() |
