Bought it off a friend who logs (I used to contract for them, and still do I suppose when the regular crew is down). They bought the wood that wasn;t getting logged off one of their settings and cut with a woodmizer. Using every bit of fiber they can in these tighter times I suppose. Nice to see it all getting used though.

I know what you are saying, about staying dry. I have started throwing my fire wood into the basement today. I have about five cord that I have to throw in, that is under tarp at the end of my house, that I would like to get thrown in.
Hope I can get it all in by Tuesday, because Wednesday, it is supposed to rain. I also have about 4 cord under the roof of my wood shed, so I'd like to see most of it get in, once the weather breaks again, then I should hopefully have enough fire wood thrown in for the winter. Bruce.

As it rains today, I have started preparing a hundred wooden toys made from Zelkova tree which I felled last year for children's green planting event next month.
The wooden toy, consists of a ball and cups linked by a line, known as "kendama" here in japan and are mostly painted red or green at its ball-section.
But the Zelkova tree has really beautiful growth rings, I don't like it painted in any way.
That's why I turn the tree into spheres and sanding them up to #240 grit.
See how nice the woods are :-)

I really feel trees are good even in rainy days.

hi Pabllo,
wow those toys are really beautiful, I had no idea that Zelkovia had such a nice grain.
A lot of work.
We hosted a Japanese student called Reiko a couple of years ago, your people have some traditions that are very special.
I would love to see more pictures of your trees and gardens, especially your trees as we don,t see many mature specimens of the native trees of Japan here. They haven,t had time to become the venerable trees they will one day become, if they survive our droughts.
If it wasn't too much trouble perhaps you might share some pictures from time to time. An idea of how high they will grow if possible would be useful knowledge to keep in mind for any future garden designs I might be asked to design.
Both the traditional and modern garden designs I have seen in books show a lot of insight.

Julie : Insight.Gardens
One day I would like to travel to your country to visit your gardens.

Thanks Julie for your paying attention to my post.
And am very happy to hear that you hosted Japanese student .l

Here is a description of the tree
---> ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zelkova_serrata
---> ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Zelkova_serrata_japan-2006.jpg

The photo of the tree in wikipedia looks relatively small one, but well shown their typical shapes.
We call them "Keyaki" which means something noble due to their - growing direct into the sky - shapes.

The kendama came out from the tree below

One night, very strong wind blow her down just near a house.

Fortunately no one harmed by her falling. I was called as a volunteer woodsman :-) from the owner who lives 50km away. She just told me you can get it with out any charge ...

Konbanwa Pabllo, dou shiteru?
Thankyou for your post. As you can see, I am learning Japanese.
I hope to travel to Japan in March 2010 as it is my wish to see the Cherry Blossoms and the old city Kyoto.
What a beautiful wood is in the Zelkova. Are you familiar with the Huon Pine?
It is a very old tree that grows deep in the wilderness in
Tasmania, Australia.
The Huon Pine also has a very fine, beautiful grain.
I am given to understand there is not much left of this tree.

Hi Farawaytree san, ohayou gozai masu(Good morning) :-)

I did't know the Huon Pine until your post. I checked it into net and found such a beautiful grain!
Thank you very much for your info

Am working as a volunteer woodsman for farmers in the neighborhood by removing hanged/too-large trees these days.

As for my reward I get the woods. And make them into bowls, toys
Sometimes, removing whole trees is getting hard work for my age :-)

Many farmers do not mind how large thier backyard trees growing.
And one day,he realizes that he can't fell it without damaging surroundings.
Arborist work is not well known in Japan yet.

Being busy at the moment, getting my fire wood into the basement of the house. I've gotten a bit in already, and piled. I threw some in yesterday morning, and I have to still pile it, to make room for more to be thrown in, and piled. Bruce.

Hi, A few small jobs on the go, got a few quotes to write. been looking at buying a small stump grinder as first one. Ad out in yellow pages this year so hopefully things will pick up. Had an Aerial rescue course down here the other day, was great, and always good to have a climb with a few other fellas.
Any one know anything about Bluebird stump grinders? I think theyre the same as the Husqvarna 13 h.p. ones. Are they worth getting? Anyone know if you can put a bigger motor on them?

Stu,

Have you checked out the Redroo range? Personally the smallest I owned was a Dosko 20HP and frankly, it was a bloody great machine and it's still going strong today. I bought it 2nd hand from Mariott's about 8 years ago, sold it 3 years ago. Personally I'd go for self propelled, I see Redroo has a 16hp model.

Cheers Ekka,
Yeah I have emailed red roo for a price list, they look like good machines. Do you know of anyone selling a used machine? Self prop would be great, but got a pretty small budget just now, so looking at importing a used 04 Bluebird from the states, 1350 USD plus shipping taxes etc.

If you want to get a small stumpy that size go for something like the Red Roo SHP400 or a Stump Humper, your back will never forgive you if you get one of those Bluebird style stump grinders. Out of all the people ive met so far in the industry only 1 person prefers that style over the Stump Humper. Also try to go for at least a 20hp engine, sometimes you have to deal with bigger stumps that only that sized machine can fit through the gate.

I'm still trying to get this years fire wood into the basement of the house. I cut a bit of fire wood yesterday (Sunday, now it is Monday here). I was planning on using my loader tractor to haul the fire wood with the bucket, to the window of the house, where I throw in my fire wood into the fire wood room.
But I blew a hydraulic line, and couldn't use the loader tractor, to haul the fire wood. I had my chain saw carrying box/work bench with my chain saws and gear in it, that I carry around with the loader tractor. So I took my pickup truck to put the chain saws, and gear out of the carrying box/work bench in it to take to the house.
After I got the pickup truck back behind the barn, where I was cutting fire wood, I decided to throw the fire wood inside the box of the pickup truck as well, and I put everything in the garage of the house. Bruce.

Hello Pabllo, thanks for the photos, that IS a venerable tree.

If Arboriculture is not well known in Japan where did you train for your work?

I believe gardening is not well known to the general public in Japan either as it might be to the British for example.

In Australia most people plant trees in the wrong place as well. Fortunately it keeps the Arborist in work. Many thanks for the jpeg. Julie: Insight Gardens.

Hi there Kamahl, just a bit of advice on using Cupressocyparis leylandii 'Leighton's Green' for screening for privacy.

They grow VERY tall, quoted to grow to about 15m but I would say taller depending on climate factors and there are have been many court cases over neighbors losing their sun.

They form a very dense hedge and will need regular topping to maintain them to the required height.

My advice to you would be to do some research on some of the Conifer Nurseries on the internet as there are many good choices, some that will grow to the height you had in mind.

Hi, busy preparing work for teaching as i now teach Arb 4 days a week at a forestry annd arb college. Work for my self two days a week, plenty of work as i have had my own business almost 20 years. Been working controling DED for many years as we still have a large number of Elms here in Sussex England. Am not too familiar with computers and Threads etc as i am a fairly practical kinda guy (no pun intended) who enjoys the working and caring for trees.

Hi Guy Litchfeild, welcome to the site.

Lots of knowledgeable people and much useful information to be gained here.

I'm so glad to hear that the Elms are still hanging in there. Such a beautiful tree.

Perhaps you could enlighten us as to the latest strategies used in the fight against the dreaded Elm disease.

You must have a wealth of knowledge with your resources and experience.

We love pics on this site

Been piling fie wood into the basement of the house. Once I get it all in, I'll have enough for this winter, I hope.
Next week, I'll be trying something new (well for me anyways) with my chain saws. I'll be trying Synthetic gas/oil mixture at 40:1, with 91% octane gasoline.
I've never run synthetic oils before, so this is going to be a learning experience for me. I mixed it the same way that I used to in the past with Stihl Premium two stroke oil, so I hope everything will be fine with the way I have my synthetic oil mixed. I'd hate to ruin my chain saws. Bruce.
