I saw your message about dutch elm diseas. I work for a company that injects thousands of trees with a product called Dutch Trig. It's a biological vaccin that prevents trees becoming ill just as an anti-flu vaccin with humans. In cities in Holland it brings down Dutch-Elmdisease casulties below 1 %. It's already allowed in the USA and other European country's See the website Dutch Trig - Elm Disease Can Be Prevented If you repeat the treatment you can preserve the beautiful Elms for future generations Willem

As much as I hate to say it...no, actually it's a complete enjoyment to say it...In this GD country and in certain states within the GD thing... If something works...they out law it, then ban it........... Unless they have a high demand for a product,...and elms are now low-demand due to the decreased number, the State won't even consider looking at the request for any limited-use product's certification... I have to do a number of things 'behind their back'... and they are well aware I'm doing them,.. but it seems a shame when you are forced to break the law just to keep some treasured older trees alive...because one branch of the government doesn't know what the other branch is doing...If any tree ever needed pruning and having the dead wood removed...it's this one. I'm going to research your recommendation and I certainly appreciate the heads up and any other information you might have... Presently I'm shifting the internal pH of the tree during the active-disease period from it's 5.4 acid to 9.0 alkaline to retard the acidic fungus spread, but I think it's like putting a band-aid on major wound... |

| No, sorry! I am not all familiar with that Company name, all the tree specialists are a pretty small group, we all cover island wide. When might he have been in business, might have been 'before my time'?

I think he bought the business in the 1970's and last I knew he was running it into the early 1990's with his son. They were from Fredricton, New Brunswick and Jim Sr. worked with me in Maine on a work visa in the 1960's, and worked in Bermuda during the winters after we shut down for the season. I've only seen him a few times since, but the last time was a while ago...I guess I was just hoping to hear he was still doing ok...when you get our age you never know what to expect next...

Just now I am building a roof over the old applepress at our school. My german friend Jochen bought the press and the mill (not in the picture) for us at an auction in Germany. To keep it in order, and avoid water in the juice on rainy days we need a roof. We are going to use old tiles, made by local brickworks 100 years ago. Besides that, I am soon going to have summer holidays! ![]() Leif. |

A friend of mine, that has a Portable Band Saw Mill gave me a call on the phone, about a Month ago, and asked me if I had any Ash Trees, of any decent size. I told him that, when the Bush was Logged a year and a half ago, that they had missed some Trees that were marked for Logging, and that I have a lot of the Tree Tops, skidded out of the road, so now I can finally get to the Trees, that I wanted to take out, and the Bush has dried up a quite a bit. I started logging these Trees on Friday, and I finished Today. I cut 8 Trees, and I wound up with 19 - 12' logs, and 2 - 16' Logs for special order, and a few Ten footers for my own use for later. I took them on two Trailer Loads, that held 5 Logs, and one load on a Wagon. I had 9 Logs on the Wagon. Now he can get a few of his Orders filled for People wanting Ash Lumber, and put some Cash in my Pockets too. Bruce.

Do you know what the expected use of the lumber is? I used ash exactly once in my life, to build a toboggan. And it was narrow stuff. Didn't need much either. May have make a bow (and arrow) with it once. Leif, interesting and attractive framing. Looks a bit like timber framing, but without the mortise and tenons.

Yes, I have borrowed some ideas from timber framing. But making mortise and tenons would take too long time, I had to make it a bit simpler. My options were: Make a simple roof, or make no roof. I have been looking a bit at this building, or shed. It's built at the place of the animal's show in Seljord. ![]() Leif. |

Got back from tornado work about two weeks ago. A small town in southern Illinois with lots of big hardwoods. Now a lot less trees. Just finished taking down a second western red cedar. Will be skidding out logs tomorrow. The second was broken in a storm two years ago, broke out at about 60', about 13" diameter at that point. 36" DBH. They are going to be milled in to deck board for my house, fence boards, and I don't know what else. |

Moving .... again. Building an apartment room into my friend's garage so I'll only be 3 miles from the new place I just got on working at, instead of 20 miles. Looks like I'll be doing "landscaping" full time (yuck), but I also get to care for all of their trees. And I get medical/dental and vacation and sick days.... so I guess that's better than sitting around with no work to do to speak of. eh... |

takin the week off from work (its a long story) but we've had some larger removals lately, one of which was a very large and old quercus garyanas, i felt bad about doing that one, but it had a significant amount of decay, not to mention the honey bees (not aggressive) and the red ants (very aggressive!) it was a tree that the customer was trying to save, and was the second time we had worked on it, but it had alot of break down, and it was completely over a building (tree out of place) we used the crane for that one (ill have pic's up soon) the bottom 8' of trunk weighed 9 thousands pounds @ 5' dbh! over a thousand pounds per foot, and it was partly hollow!........ this week we did a huge acer macrophyllum (it had a huge bees nest too) that had one of its main leads on the street side break out and land on a pick up truck! then the guy parked a rental car in a different place under the same tree and had a smaller limb come down and land on it as well! people start paying attention to there trees when stuff like that happens! that one took us two full hot days with the bucket truck, the crane and three people. glad when we finished. preventative maintenance saves you from those high sap flow summers!

I'm working on my own website .... change is good so I'm changing a few things around, putting in some case scenarios so people see what I do in the consulting arena.

I'm slow now at both jobs. I deliver trusses full time and do the more enjoyable tree work on the side. People in our area aren't spending money. Enough work cleaning trees to stay busy two or three days a week but not getting behind by any stretch. I have an interesting leaner that is hung up in a small group of trees and over hanging a garage. Also a very nice large black walnut to clean that should be fun to climb. Putting the finishing touches on a small thinning job. Power line clearing, take downs, and some cleaning, all in all a nice job to have.
