I am actually in college right now. I am at Purdue University, my major is Agribusiness Management and during the summers I run my own company. I cut trees residentially, sell firewood, have a bobcat for grading, trim back fields for farmers, and do some landscaping on the side. I have been running my own business since i was 9 and know that it my what i want to do in the long run. I have been working on a business plan while i am here at school and plan to launch my company as soon as i graduate. I have some questions though, while i am writing my business plan and i am trying to figure out how many tree jobs i can expect? What is typical business for you guys? (I live in central Maryland) I have a lot of the tools needed to get started in the business but when i get out of school i plan to take on a loan and hit everything a lot harder. Any tips or pointer would be great and much appreciated. As far as jobs coming up i will be home for spring break and will be doing some of my older clients landscaping. When i get home in the summer i have two tree jobs lined up and a patio to install. I also am going to be advertising for firewood and hope to double my firewood customers this coming year. |

Well spring is around the corner here, you wouldn't know it though, -35C windchill this morning. I'll have my tree service up and running in a few weeks, my phone is starting to ring already and I have lots of work left over from last season. I take the winters off ,Dec. to end of March. Work 8 mths a year is enough for me here in Northern Manitoba. I have 4 months in a warm shop working on my equipment and some good quality time with my young family. After 28 yrs running Stihl saws and Jonsered 7 years before that, I just made the switch to Husqvarna. I bought a 372XP last year and liked it so much that I went out and recently bought a new 346XP and a 395XP. I'm very eager to put them to work. Here is a list of my saw lineup: *Stihl MS200, 020, 026, 034, 038 Mag, 044, 064, 066 Mag, 090AV. *Husqvarna 346XP,372XP,395XP. *Yamaha YZ 125 liquid cooled hotsaw. I built this saw 26 years ago and of course it's only for fun. She sports a 42mm carb on her 123cc jug. When I figure out how to post pics on here you can all have a view. Willard. |

It must have been the Same Feeling, when Dad used to watch my Sister and I, drive it then. Dad has been Gone for 10 Years, and I feel his Presents around me, when my Daughter is out on it. As for me, I only drive it, once or twice a Year, just to make Sure, that everything Works like it Should. I have a Bad Back, and Riding it, well I can't stand it anymore, because of the Pain. Bruce.

Tis a cold house today as the gas heating packed up and it needs a new thermoregulator. God knows when they'll get the part. Meanwhile no heat or hot water, unless we use the immersion heater to heat the water, which uses electric up like billy o.

Heres a pic of my YZ hotsaw and Stihl 090-60". The Alaska sawmill and aluminum slabbing rails I keep under my work trailer for cutting lumber from some high grade trees I may come upon every now and then. I have cut 2"x12"x32ft lumber from some big spruce that I have removed. |

Sweet little setup Holmen, perfect for those tight little residential driveways that are height limited! I used to race 250cc yamadogs back in the early 80's. I trust your hotsaw is watercooled? jomoco |

I built that little 125 YZ over 26 years ago. Hasn't raced for about 10 yr. It needs some remodeling ,lose some weight , new pipe, new porting. It has a 42mm Tilly HD carb on it and yes it is watercooled. Just enough water in the cylinder to make the 5 second or less cuts. | |

Mr Therrin, new photo I see. well here in Australia I work in all the area's of arboriculture, Large removals to tree reports etc etc. at the moment its all small jobs but plenty of it. have an interesting chipper put a Vermeer onto a bob cat base and drive it into hard to get at places, saves time and reduces the area for clean up. I will endeavor to post some pictures onto the site but still working through it all. so I thank all for the arboricultural brotherhood, take care. Paul arbormatters.

Hey Paul, love to see that chipper you got. ![]() A climber who worked with me a little many years ago was going to build something similar. I always thought it was a great idea. |

Residential work is a little slow, commercial is ok and my gov't contracts help keep a two week backlog. We are doing fairly well considering the state of the economy

Hi Therrin, This is way cool! Thank you for the warm greeting. Work is going well, I am as busy as ever (thank goodness for that!). Today I went and got two giant Fuyu persimmon trees, so I went on the web trying to get instructions for planting them. I hope I do a good job, I want lots of persimmons in years to come. These are, according to the nursery, already 5 years old, so I should be getting them yummy persimmons any day now. I'm in Portland, OR, so there aren't that many hours of sun in a day, and there are few days of sun really in a year, so I'm just hoping for the best.... But first thing first, gotta plant them. |

Cool page Ekka looks great. Ok WTF does LOL stand for?. I have been on here for that long and still havn't figured it out. Your wright, not much at Dirranbandi.Few shops and one pub but had a full one three day's. Fell a heap of dead trees through town on the footpaths for the council and Ended up grinding out 25 stumps at the show ground's and around town. TOPPING- well the council wanted me to top about 12 euc's at the show grounds and so I grabbed there cherry picker and went at it. NOT. I explaned to them about what effects it has and how it would be worse off for the tree's so just leave them alone. Felt good to give to give the right info. TOPPING- well I also picked up some work at the Hospital while I was there too,Stumps dead tree's ect. And they wanted to top a heap of very large Gum''s at the back of the hospital, but talked them out of it too.And another guy wanted the same thing so again the speal.Although a tried to talk the hospital into more of a maintenance program as a lot of there Ceder tree have been topped at about one to two meters and are now buggered. So will see what happens.Took down a one and a half meter wide topped Coolabah tree at the school, gave the kids something too look at.And a bit of work here and there. Just spent Sat and Sun working on gear.

Its just how its always been done out here Ekka, by everyone. Councils that other mob I told you about, home owners and I didn;t know any better at one stage either. I was thinking about running a proper prunning cuts ad in our local paper,it's amazing how many young tree's out here are just lopped half way through the branch. The other one out here is that if you cut the head out of it while it's young the Tree will spread.Hear that alot.
