Default Why does our Crab Apple tree have red and white flowers?

This spring our crab apple tree started to bud and we thought there was something wrong with the tree casue some of the buds looked dark. To our surprise when they opened up they were red. Adding to our confusion was the fact that there were also white flowers on the tree. What would cause this?

Hi! Some Malus species have deceptive flowering. (M. floribunda, M. 'Mary Potter', M. 'Donald Wyman' etc).

The bud develops dark pink, the flower opens pink then fades to white - giving the illusion of two differing flower colours on the one plant. Is it grafted? If so, it could be flowering off the understock (below the graft), and that could be a different coloured species.

Pics duder!
