The tree may be worth from wood chip, to limber , to a cost to getting rid of it. That so the real world, and the land upon which it stands worth more when it is gone
Now thats a very sad perspective on the world....and I'm the one hosing down the real world??

Pity you bring emotion into a logical argument, not good, and doesn't gain much.

When writing reports they say remove as much emotion as you can, cool with me, dont have a lot to start with.

Real estate is called that for a reason, it's REAL, is there, you stand on it, kick it, eat it of you like, it will always be there. That's why banks love it.

Yep I'm just breaking down here You'd be objecting to what economists like to call externalilties, yes the world is just chockablock full of them annoying little buggers, messing with the real world like they do!

Didn't think we were writing a report here, thought it was a discussion? Sometimes emotions will get in there...I try my best Eric but you know its just not good enough for everyone...ah well........

No worries, there's many sides to a coin, fools think there's only two.

Yes and it would be a dull place if everyone agreed with me....mind you I reckon I could put up with it for a day or two!!! (Maybe just my kids for a start!)

Sorry to break in here but a fair valuation from this yank's view is replacement cost--what does it take to haul in a new one and make it live.

Also the notion that trees depreciate is half true--they can appreciate too.

I'll try to link the ppt I use to present on this--doing it again feb 15 in virginia. popular topic; 3rd time this year. I use 10+ case studies to illustrate the reasons for and the methods used and the madness of the realworld results--all over the map they are.

Fascinating work--I do another on a condemnation case tomorrow; whoops today, 8 hours from now, gnight, or should I say gday!

There's many methods, why dont we get an example tree and run it through the various methods and compare answers?

Eric, good idea.

Sean, right now it's chockablock with hi-meg images and precious little text, so it may not make much sense. I'll work with it a bit in prep for the 12th, and see if I can't get it to you then.

Just saw Gilman yesterday; heard a couple of his talks and revisited his site. Amazing that he can get so much into <10 mb.

Here's the handout I used when I presented this to a lawyers' group's ceu course. Names and numbers expunged but it gives you the idea I hope.

Thankyou Guy whatever you can send my way will be gratefully accepted...I can introduce you to some great micro-brewery beers if you come over in May?

Eric yes it is a good idea, and yes we should all expect very different outcomes from different individuals conducting the valuation. Maybe the best way would be to have a hypothetical tree (real species) with diagram rather than picture...as this will prove easier for everyone to follow? But.......if you already have one in mind then go ahead.

Most of the valuation methods attempt to define a base value for the particular tree (cubic metre) then multiply that by the total volume of the tree in question....now the base value can be derived in different ways depending on the specific method...and of course there are a list of additional factors that get added (or rather multiplied!) into the mix.

Sounds very tasty indeed, and I would love to see Schwarze and Lonsdale etc., but that trip is far from my present means. But I should never say never...

That's my understanding as well.

Ah well maybe when the ISA conference proper comes in 2011 (at least I think its the 2011 conf???)

I have a few old valuations that we could pull apart maybe? Just not sure I have the pics to help show how the volume is calculated...which is kinda why I thought maybe diagrams would work better.

Yes it's 2011, though I am aiming for the next Pan-Asian; 2009?

wow!!! an interesting topic.... I see it like this... every life has a chance at being. I don't believe any human has the right to decide whether life should or should not exist. I certainly don't think anyone can say something doesn't have the right to exist. The more I understand the less I am willing to condemn. Hurts the mind doesn't it to think you are no better than the life around you!!!
It's life guys and all things have a gateway
don't tread on anyones or anythings right to survive
