Hawthorn tree will not face the axe - Leader News: Melbourne community news

BOROONDARA councillor Luke Tobin accused his colleagues of "losing the plot" after they refused the removal of a eucalyptus tree from a Hawthorn property.

Councillors voted 5-2 to save the tree, with Cr Tobin only supported by Cr Dick Menting for the tree's removal, at the council meeting on May 19.

The body corporate had applied to remove the 13m narrow-leaved peppermint eucalyptus tree from the front garden of units at 8 Coppin Grove, Hawthorn.

There were 11 objections to the tree's removal, including one from the St James Park Association.

Mayor Coral Ross ignored a council officer's recommendation to remove the tree and instead moved a motion to save the tree.

"If we approve the removal of this tree, we would approve the removal of hundreds," Cr Ross said.

But Cr Tobin described the tree as "insignificant" and said it was "just another tree of thousands".

He said the "loopy environmental argument" was "ridiculous". "The trees didn't cast votes to elect us at the last election," Cr Tobin said.

Camberwell resident Liz Burton said the arborist reports did not provide "conclusive evidence" and there was no valid reason to remove the canopy tree.

Environmental biologist Graeme Lorimer, who spoke at Boroondara's sustainability forum on May 12, said it was often better to lose a few trees in the inner suburbs than whole paddocks of vegetation on the urban fringe.

"If you build an apartment on the urban fringe you have to cut down far more trees than you would in Boroondara," Dr Lorimer said.

"So in the global scheme of things Boroondara's loss may be outweighed by the global gain."

However, Dr Lorimer said the amenity of local residents needed to be protected and competing interests had to be balanced.

"You need to keep people in touch with nature so they are willing to make the right environmental decisions," he said.
