Default wanna keep 18 people alive?

the other day i purchased a few books at the bookstore. one of them went into depth on the history and evolution of trees. it stated that 1 acre/.4ha of tree is capable of keeping 18 people alive by filtering pollution, absorbing co2 and releasing oxygen. does anyone have any idea how much o2 a certain tree of specific size might release in a specific amount of time.

i guess i need .055 acres of trees in my bomb shelter to gear up for the end of the world

Bigshea13 I think others have explored most of this elsewhere in other threads, but if you have a real desire to get some data into you look here for reliable reseasrch and info on the very topic you ask about Pacific Southwest Research Station

Bottom line for me is that single trees even groups of trees like any other single element of our ecosystem cannot fix what we have broken and seem determined to smash up even further....However I do believe very strongly that trees are a major part of the answer more in the sense that by generating a real understanding and appreciation of what trees mean for the whole system us included we will very gradually change the way enough people feel and think about their own environment to make their own small changes in the way they live...we're Arborists so thats the part of the puzzle we deal with, thats the areas we focus on....yes there's a whole lot more to it than just the trees but the trees are what we deal with...so we should be able to help others focus more clearly on how trees and proper progressive long term tree care can assist in improving with the mess we have created.

A lot o' people don't realize that a tree does not only produce O?. It also consumes almost the same amount it produces. At the end of the calculation, you'll come to find that the amount of oxigen wich is left over for us is rather small. That's why rainforests all over the world are so important. They produce a lot more oxygen compared to what they consume.

I aint deleting this thread, it's a good one.

I've been thinking about alternate structures to trees actually and pretty much I can say they dont provide (for surface area or volume) the benefits trees do.

Sure, you can erect shade sails, but they wont transpire and cool the air in the vicinity and add to rainfall when enmass like forests do.

Oh, they wont filter pollution or air either.

Nor will the man made shade structures yield anything edible or consumable (from furniture to firewood).

Nor will they keep ground water down lowering soil salinity.

Nor will they reduce surface run off and erosion.

Oh well, that's just a few off the top of my head but it's hard to replace trees with a man made alternative that's as good.

A key ingredient is public parks and street trees, as the urban block gets smaller and subdivisions denser there has to be good town planning to make sure there's green space.
