Default UC Berkeley Tree Sitters

Anyone been following this, what a debacle.

Cal, tree-sitters both happy after judge rules

There's some good pics, I liked this one of some nutter in a box 100' high!

They did get a few out and arrested etc. Worth reading the whole story.

Quote:
The first tree-sitters clambered into the oaks and redwoods Dec. 2, 2006, as 75,000 football fans filed past to attend the Big Game against Stanford. About two dozen protesters have rotated in and out of the trees since then, occasionally tussling with police, campus security and hostile football fans. Campus police have made about 100 arrests and issued more than 200 citations.

UC took several steps to remove the tree-sitters, including obtaining a court order, erecting a pair of fences to hamper the delivery of food and removal of waste, and periodically removing the protesters' backpacks, guitars, blankets and other gear.
Quote:
UC police also identified a tree-sitter arrested Tuesday. Marisa Schneidman, 19, bit the arm of an arborist who was trying to get to one of the ropes, said UC spokesman Mogulof. The arborist and a co-worker wrestled her into a cherry-picker and handed her over to police, Mogulof said.

Workers and police were pelted several times with human urine and excrement thrown by tree-sitters Tuesday, Mogulof said.

In one of several tense moments Wednesday, a basket with two workers was lowered by crane to the trunk of a tall tree on top of which a screaming young woman was perched on a small wooden platform about 100 feet in the air.

The woman, identified by sympathizers as Dumpster Muffin, screamed and violently shook the precarious perch. The crane backed off, and the woman raised her hand in the air in a sign of victory.

"I've lived here my whole life, and I've never seen anything this wild," UC employee Syreeta Shepherd said as she watched the drama unfold.

Tossing feces started the police riot in 1968 at the Democratic convention in Chicago. It is a good way to seriously tick someone off.

The grove is very small compared to the present athletic facilities. Football is larger than life here.

Dumpster Muffin? Ewww.

New strategy is starve them out.

deprivation could succeed where other strategies have failed.

On Thursday evening, police closed off the sidewalk and street next to the trees to prevent a brigade of activists from delivering food and water to their brethren in the branches. The university also cut one of the tree-sitters down as part of an effort to remove those who do not put up a fight.

"They plan to starve us out," said a tree-sitter who identified himself as Cricket, perched high in a branch Thursday, awaiting a resupply of food, water and building materials. With Cricket's sleeping platform destroyed this week by the university's arborists, he plans to sleep in a hammock. "We're working to protect and rebuild our infrastructure."

thats a pretty interesting story. dumpster muffin. gross. some people should get jobs and get educated on trees b4 becoming activists. i tried to remove a half dead cedar hedge in between two apartment buildings so it could be replaced with a better suiting tree that wouldn't ruin the foundation. 1 tenant between the 2 buildings didn't want it removed. he was so persistant to actually get in front of my saw b4 i could cut that we had to have the police come in. legally we can take it out but anytime anyone tries he's right there.

we have the olympics coming in 2010 and lots of athletic buildings going in. i got to fall a row of 10-15 maples 3-4 feet across and have an excavatoro dispose of them. not a soul showed up to complain. i love winters in bc for certain reasons. if we did it mid summer, dumpster muffin of sorts would have been there full swing.
