I realized about as much after talking to TreeDimensional about it for a while on the phone. He was explaining all the stuff Sean Freeman had shown in the pictures. Thanks to all of you, for the info.

It was nice to see all the information getting thrown at it, good too! The hammering helps to drive the point home. At least I'm not afraid to show what I've done, even if I didn't get it right. I imagine there are several here who'd only post the best of their works, and definitely not their mistakes; but I hope this makes good learning material for other people who see the site. I certainly learn from it.

WTF!

Felling wedges, you see me banging them in my videos all the time, even on roped fells.

The wedge is your friend, it's both your defence and attack on leans and momentum, the prevention of sit back etc.

Once more I feel like a bum, once more I've learned something great.

I know what wedges are I was just playing, simply hadn't ever used them before! As I said, I'll pick some up tomorow.

I'm used to rigging down alot of stuff, hadn't done alot of plain felling. Starting to do that more so I'll pick some up!

Seems that everything I post with pictures turns into a SNAFU, but I'll keep posting and you all can keep hammering at me and saying "WTF? and "that'll get you killed!" and "I'm to old to do stuff like that!"
and at some point it'll all come clear.
Finally I'll post some pics, and you'll all nod your heads and smile that the youngin is catching on.
At that point I'll have ascended to godliness and get lazy and buy a crane and bucket truck, and lambast climbers whenever I get the chance.

There's alot of info on this site, zimbabwe...

It's like wading through something and picking up whatever brushes up against ya. Nice to see things coming at ya from different directions though, increases your chances of finding something good!

Criticism can be a good learning tool!
But could too much criticism turn one into a procrastinator?

The diagram that I drew yesterday in relation to leaning trees was about as wrong as it could be!!! DON"T CUT IN THE WAY SHOWN IN MY DIAGRAM!!!!

Here's how my bad diagram should have been drawn......thanks to Bigshea for prodding my lazy bum into correcting it...apologies to all for the original which was too hastily drawn and basically got things arseaboutface.
Remember this is for forward leaning trees, with a significant lean, and the intention is to avoid a barberchair.

Though I will admit that when I do this type of felling cut I cut the strap in line with the plunge not as far below it as shown, I will make more effort to make the final cut below the plunge as shown in the diagram.

Therrin, you've had a lot of good advice here.
The end result of your job was that the tree fell where you wanted it too, so good job!

When Therrin called me last night, I got the pleasure of SAYING, WTF. I'll give him a pat on the back for laying it out there for the rest to see, and allowing the members here to dole out their years of exerience. I was on a vertical learning curve when I first started, I was a lot longer in the tooth than he is, and life experiences wakened that little voice we all have.

I was asked to look at a job at a park, a 32" poplar between 2 cabins about 8' apart. It went up about 24'and went co-dominant. The crotch had split and didn't stop until about 5' off the ground. My little voice said "Hey stupid you don't have the knowledge or the equipment to work on that thing". The little voice was right, the cabin owner asked what to do, I knew a guy form 120 miles away that loved working on hazard trees, I gave him a call. I often think back to that day, everytime I look at a tree that is seriously damaged. Dave Loraas was the first tree climber that I ever saw climb that hazard tree, he took me under his wing for a variety of tree work, unselfishly teaching me a lot of what he knows. The funny thing about it all was the fact that he didn't believe me when I relayed the size info to him, and at the completion of that removal, he politley asked me to NEVER call him again for that type of work. We fumbled around, learning and applying our new knowledge, and eventually started using cranes for that Large, no LZ, hazardous stuff.

The point I am trying to make here is, if you have even an inkling of a though that your in over your head, You Probably are. This site has proved that there are people out there that are willing to help, internet learning is becoming an epidemic, ask you doctor next time you see him, after you have miss-diagnosed yourself. The Dr. will usually forgive you, a tree landing on your head doesn't care about you.

There has been a wealth of knowledge posted on this thread, but having someone on site to watch out for ya, or kick ya in the butt for listening and then doing your own thing is priceless. For the new guys out there, find someone to take you under their wing, male adult pride sometimes can be our undoing.
