Default tree saga ends abruptly!

Tree saga's abrupt end - Local News - News - Northern District Times

Quote:
1 Dec 10
RYDE Council is investigating the sudden death of a native gumtree in Colvin Cres, Denistone East.

The Corymbia Citriodora, or lemon scented gum, was 20m tall and about 90 years old.

In October 2007 the owners applied to have the gum removed but Ryde Council staff refused to approve it as their inspection at that time found no defects in the tree.

“Since then there had been several more attempts by the owner to gain council’s permission to remove the tree,” a council spokeswoman said.

“The owner, however, has not provided any report from a professional arborist to substantiate the removal of the tree as had been repetitively asked for.”

Three weeks ago Ryde councillors agreed to meet the homeowners to see if it posed a hazard close to the house.

But last week , before that meeting could take place, the council was told the tree had died.

Council officers are now investigating the cause.

When the Northern District Times asked a women in the home about how the tree died, she burst into tears.

“Yes, we put something on it,” she said. “But it was very dangerous. We spent more than $5000 on repairs, and when I was heavily pregnant I was up until 2am cleaning up water that had leaked through cracks caused by the tree.

“My neighbours have children and were worried too.”

When pressed if the tree had been poisoned, she said; “I wouldn’t call it that, because the tree was very dangerous.”

She showed Times where the roots had lifted paving and left large cracks in the walls.

“Council didn’t care about us, they did nothing,” she said.

Two weeks ago, Cr Roy Maggio had proposed that the council’s tree policy be changed to make it easier for homeowners to appeal if their application for tree removal was rejected.

His proposal was rejected by councillors.

Compared to the size of the house that's a large tree for sure.

I'd love to see more pics of the damage done, also I wonder why they didn't try to get an arborist report done? Maybe they did and arbs wouldn't do it???

My city council would have probably evicted the homeowner and demolished the house. I’m not kidding!

God these stories are getting annoying, you can see it from both sides of the fence. We need some sort of rule where if you want to cut down a mature tree you must offset it with the correct number of trees, either on your property or somewhere else.

Yeah, it's often a condition of the permit approval. It doesn't mean you can just cut down anything as long as you replace it, but most removal permits do require that you replant.

Its mostly for developers, not all councils require permits for residential works.

Here in Toronto, if you cut a tree down (private, residential) they expect at least one more to replace it - sometimes several (depends on the official) and the tree needs to guaranteed for 5 years or more until it reaches 30 cm limit..If it dies, a replacement is required, If you choose not to plant a tree on your land, you pay the city $600 and they plant a tree in one of the parks., Commercial developers usually have to plant more trees.
