Default Tree KO

I saw this on the news. Who's fault do you think it was?

Frankly, after watching carefully I think the man was hit on the side of the head (temple area) and that's what knocked him out.

The reporter says the throat but it doesn't look that way to me.

Who's fault?

Every ones, including the boss!

Team lifting

Team lifting has inherent risks and does not provide an adequate long term solution for moving heavy materials. The heavier the materials the higher the risk of manual handling injury when team lifting. Team lifting is often neither time nor cost effective. Alternatives to team lifting should be considered during the planning phase. If team lifting is utilised all workers involved must be trained and the lift coordinated.
Also from the document attached.

Quote:
There is an increased risk whenever the load is below mid-thigh height or above shoulder level
5 men lifting a log off the car, 3 men on one end and two on the other.

Other end is dropped first (as only two people on it) but the guy injured is resting the log on his shoulder and against his face. He needed to be clear of that situation at all times. Could have ended up worse with broken shoulder or collar bone. The short drop and consequent quick jarring of the log into his head knocked him out.

Were alternatives considered? Could it have been lifted off by other means? Could the car have been moved beneath a tree that served as a crane and lifted it off with rigging?

Many options, and his team lifters should have cleared him away from that carrying position. Just as well the guy is alright but yes, that's how easy it is to get in strife.

The adrenalin of the "moment" propels all for a quick solution yet hazardous one. They need to get a copy of that and use it for training.

Great Knock out Stomach 5, large intestine 18, galbladder 21 all consecutively poor bugger would have woken up after five minutes wondering what happened.
I wonder why they didn't simply reduce the size before lifting? easy enough and less problems!

Cutting it shorter wouldnt have helped unless saw the hand was standing on top of the car.....can anyone say workers compensation!?

The best way to remove this log was simply to roll the piece off backwards. It's not as if the paintwork could get worse.....

My brother-in-law is a 20 year veteran with the local S.E.S. so I appreciate the amazing work that these unpaid volunteers do everyday. But I still cringe when he uses a chainsaw.....

In WA it is my understanding that SES have insurance for accidents whilst on call out. Exactly what the payout on claims is, I cannot say. My B.I.L. did not have any details.

Technically it would not be workers comp... more accident insurance. My bad.

Poor guy, hope he was ok.

funny how things always go wrong when there's a crowd watching.

As for the volunteers insurance,

the insurance company would weasel their way out of paying up,

why?

because it wasn't an accident.

it was an "Act of Log".
