Default Training for Arborists

I am Thinking of running an intense tree surgery course full time over 12 weeks in queensland to acheive at least the following competencies and to go a long way towards cert III arb.
L1 to 3 chainsaw,
Plant Ident
Shrub and small tree pruning
Basic tree climbing ,
Aerial rescue,
Complex tree climbing,
Chipper,
Stump grinder.
Anyone got any comments on content or duration?
Please let me know.
Maybe its time for those long serving groundies to get trained.

TFT:

Anythings better than nothing but hell, I reckon there are ENOUGH people out there running stumpies & chippers. I reckon concentrate on the stuff off the ground. Get the pruning basics down BEFORE people get off the ground...there are plenty of climbers out there, that doesn't mean that they are any good at pruning a tree...surely thats where we should be heading?

That's a good idea...hit the core of all the basics, turn out a competent operator with a good idea of what's expected and how to do it...lay a solid foundation for further development.

In the Uk they do a course like this at Merrist Wood (Guildford College)...10 weeks full time:
You could ask for a prospectus...
I did it as a top up course when I switched from Landscape horticulture to Arb.
Covers:
Saw maintenance and operation
Machinery - chippers, grinder, high lift
Pruning, handsaws and chainsaws
Felling, incl.leaners and hung ups
Climbing, chainsaw from rope and harness
Ariel rescue
Rigging, sectional felling
Tree biology
Pests and disease
Biomechanics
Tree law
Woodland management
Pricing and estimating

60-70% practical - 30-40% theory
Practical tests - City& Guilds NPTC
Written exam
