Lightbulb Tip Of The Day

I must be honest and admit to borrowing this thread from another forum that I use, but it produced some usefull posts and as you guys are all of an intelegent ilk I expect great things!

Here is a couple of offerings to start you off (again borrowed!):

Sharpening a saw on site can be awkward, cut a couple of inches depth into a lump of wood, hey presto a bar holder!

To keep files from dulling in your tool box, keep them individually wrapped in a drinking straw!

This one is more common sense than anything else but since i have done work for a few different companies it appears not to be all that common!!!

Have at least three sharpened spare chains for all your saws, and spare clutch springs, spark plugs, starter cords, spare bar.
Set aside part of one day every week for gear maintenance, and make sure it gets done every week log the work.
Make sure you have blood stoppers in the first aid kit (Blood Stopper Trauma Dressing) they don't always come as standard but are brilliant for those messy annoting unplanned events!!!! Some guys are organised enough to have one on their harness.

Great thread with good responses so far.

I've got two at the moment, pretty obvious for the experienced but can make a difference for the newby.

During a removal on a tree (assuming your wearing hooks), If you need a good comfortable work position without sliping whilst limb walking, gaff into any crotch or collar(If there are any) on the branch rather then the bark. Now, no more slipping and tearing up the bark.

For gear maitenance, buy an air compressor. $100 super cheap auto special. It will cut your maitenance time in half for those of you that clean out your saws with a rag and toothbrush.

Sounds odd but womens sanitary products are custom made blood stoppers! Not a bad addition to a personal first aid kit!

I still think the $14.75 I paid for my QuickClot sponge that comes in its niffty little hermetically foil-sealed package is well worth not having to run around with my saw chaps stuffed with feminine sanitary napkins.

Besides, I can work in the rain without having to worry about that pocket turning into a soppy mess if water gets in there.

Also have a one in my First Aid Box, and one in the truck.

This thread started off as a constructive, informational discussion, and I believe it has degraded to garbage, especially the two previous posts.

I would like to remind posters that this IS an International Site, read by NOT ONLY men, but women too. As to cultural diversity, some things that offend some people don't bother others. I would urge all posters to keep in mind that there is free speech on this site, but some of the things that are posted may lessen the value of the site as a whole.

Carry around a bottle of Lubriderm hand lotion in your work truck. Every day before putting your gloves on, or before starting to work; lotion your hands liberally, rub it in good, then wipe off the excess.

Keeps your dry hands from absorbing mix and bar oil and other fun stuff, so you don't smell or feel like it at the end of the day.

Been doing some concrete work for a friend who's getting permited as the first house in Los Angeles county to build a house that's run purely solar with no grid-tie.
Using liberal almounts of lotion before working with concrete, mixers, mortar, and block keeps the lime from sucking your hands dry and keeps them feeling good at the end of the day.
