Im a fairly young arborist with next to nearly every "ticket" under the sun. I've made a point of it to be able to use them not just have something shiny in my portfolio. I work with people that have the same but cannot apply skills and or common sense to the training. Is it really such a big thing to have a wallet full of cards? I suppose my greatest concern is the danger factor that's involved. These trainers are obviously giving them away even with just the things i've seen scared the hell out of me. TAFE training.... I worked in the industry for some time before i went to tafe so i had experience to add to my learning, since that ive learnt that its not always practical doing it the tafe way, Am i the only one who feels this? |

I am a Tafe trained Arborist, Tafe trains you to proven industry standards. Work methods in the field are a mixture of on the job experience..hit and miss type scenarios that I have observed, a lot of people with years of self taught experience and some who have done Tafe training years ago think Tafe is only filling their classes and do not really care about the quality of training..bums on seats ! In my opinion the Tafe experience is value for money, the majority of the teachers have around twenty years of experience, this experience goes back to their hit and miss days to properly trained and proved methods, then using this experience of the past you can use the best possible informed method to undertake the job at hand. When you consider the tickets we have, some could be looked at from the duty of care thing, from the employers point of view, " we had them trained your honour " they have the tickeks to show for it. Others pick up the ball where Tafe left off such as the chainsaw felling level your trained to in level 3. Think about how many times in suburbia can you utilise the full extent of your level 2 (forestry) chainsaw ticket ? In two years as a suburban arborist Ive only used my training on smaller trees albeit the same technique the anticipation level of 3-4 meter tree compared to a tree of 20 meters is not the same although you take the same care. There are more ticket we could talk about but i will leave them for someone else. Some food for thought, Common sense is not that common anymore..

Im not writing off tafe teachers in anyway... i guess the point i was trying to get across/ clarify is why do these people have these tickets if they cant use them. Ive been watcing this one Arborist and they could use a rational or simple way of dismantling a tree whether it was 20m tall or 5. They have all the credentials and wat not but seem oblivious to a a direct simple safe approach. Any one can call themselves an arborist but not many can work like one. Do we all work with people like this or am i just lucky???????

Please answer these questions. I was going to just go out there and say my piece but then I thought about it more and decided to get some facts, which I think will sell my instinctual thought anyway. This "arborist", please provide me the following data:- Approx age? Number of years at the job prior to getting certs? Number of years at the job after getting certs? None of these answers will identify him but it will help the why.
