Default Storm Damaged Trees in the South US

Reading about "task force" to help evaluate damaged trees.

Seems like a real good idea, read that Dr. Gilman was an advisor.

Excellent article, I liked this part.

Quote:
University of Florida tree expert Ed Gilman told the conference that research with a wind machine blowing at 120 mph, or the strength of a Category 3 hurricane, showed proper pruning can reduce wind damage but that the wrong pruning can make matters worse. "Hat-racked" and "overlifting" — too many bottom branches removed — are among the wrong ways to prune, tree experts say.

Catch22,

More storms, more damaged decaying trees means more CO2 released means more storms and so on.

Great if your in the tree business.

Elsewhere though (Brisbane) the weathers been pretty darn good really for some 5 years now. Last big bust up storms were Feb 2004 ... but this year might be different, it's a lot wetter than normal and La Nina is here.

I can only wait and hope all hell busts loose.

So, I'm not the only one waiting. It's been a while, we're going to get it soon.

About an hour drive northwest, loggers are busy cutting down and loading 60-foot-tall loblolly pines at the Jenkins Farm and Nursery.

"The trees that are salvaged during this operation, the carbon will not be released, because it will stay in the form of boards and be used for construction and housing," said Kirk Casanova with the Louisiana Department of Forestry.
I wonder if they take into account the equip. needed for "modern" tree opperations and release of huge amounts of Co2 (trucks, saws, mills, construction).

But I guess all those broken trees look bad...
