Default Spare some timber for me!

Hi, newb here. I'm on the look out for any interesting fruitwoods or European timbers. If any of you Melbourne tree choppers ever have anything interesting and would prefer to see the wood going to good use rather than into the chipper, please PM me and I'll gladly pay you for your trouble. I live in the eastern bay area of Melbourne.

How are you going to pick them up??People want to get paid for doing the tree and that generally means getting rid of the wood,if your prompt and have contacts to do pick ups you might be a chance.

Just giving some honest advice..

Pick 'em up! That's why I'm offering money, I want it delivered!

Seriously, thanks for the advice and I probably couldn't tie in collecting the timber with everyone else schedules. But if any arborist or tree lopers can throw anything from branches as thick as your arm up to ... well anything you can man handle into your trailer or ute AND you happen to be in the eastern bay area, then I'm your man for slabs of beer or cash, what ever works for you.

Find yourself a cheap tilt tray operator and you will soon have as much wood as a man could want.

Any tree services time is likely worth 10 times what you're offering.

It really needs to be up to you to collect, & promptly, on the day of the job.

Think about it, it will only take minutes to put it all through the chipper, or couple of hours to sort wood, load separately, then go for a drive, unload & head back.

Lots of good wood does go to waste because people aren't prepared to do this.

The tree company is there to serve it's clients & make a profit and the end.

The tree company does this by trading it's time for the customers money.

Any blowout in time means reduced or no profit.

Why would the tree company want to blow its profit so you can do some woodturning?

The time spent getting that wood to you needs to be compensated to at least equal to what it would have made just finishing the job the quickest way possible.

So, give me a price. I've already offered to pay and at the end of the day, what ever the price, it's bound to be cheaper than what the majority of the timber stores charge for unusual species of timber. My time is very costly, so it would probably be cheaper for me to pay someone to drop the timber off than for me to try and coordinate collection and take time away from my work.

There's bound to be some arborists/tree lopers either working in my location or who would be driving past my location on their way home and would be prepared to earn a bit extra from a job and see the timber going to good use.

I agree, if you are close by or enroute then a truck load dropped off would be a bonus for both parties.

I used to haul wood miles to get rid of it for free vs paying to dump it, not everyone has a 18"+ chipper.

A good start would also be to ring around some local tree companies in your area, I bet once a few get to know you they'll be dropping stuff off.

In this video a large truck load of timber left the jobsite, we could have headed it to your place (for example).

They don't look like European trees to me! And 30 tons would peobably bury my shed. Thanks for the offer all the same.

Find yourself someone to transport the logs, we just gave away about 3 semi loads of 4.8m cypress logs to a mill. If you can get the transport then a lot of people will just give away the wood, heaps easier than cutting it half/quarters and chipping it.

I fill your pain and certainly understand what you are trying to say, however, the successful acquisition of timbers that are suitable for your wood turning, or the ones that you prefer to work with, is not as simple as it runs in ones mind. Sure, thousands of tones are dumped, shipped or burn every day, and the idea to utilize a natural resource instead of having it destroyed, is a commendable one but, in the tree industry/world, things work slightly different than you may think or wished...!

While I can not cut and or remove, many tree/branches of trees that I would be very happy to have for my wood turning, as they are non privately own (council, government, etc...!), I often get that wood from the contractors if I'm aware when the job is taking place, or I see it in progress and I am within acceptable driving distance from my place and trailer. I do not recall to have been denied any logs they cut down and in many cases, they are happy to cut then the length you prefer, which is always longer that what they usually cut it for dumping or shipping.

Anything on the ground that you can use, they are happy for you to have, if your presence is not interfering with the work or the safety barriers/limits/distances/area of work if it still is ongoing. There will be one person in charge that will facilitate the removal of those wanted logs from the working area into your location, in fact, in machinery is present, they will load the logs directly into your trailer.

Getting rid-off the logs by most contractors, is a job that they will be most happy in not having to do it so, giving then to you, on the spot or "arrange/agree" to have their dump truck unload on your property/yard, preferentially if is within a short driving distance, would be a bonus to them, firstly if the logs are too big for their chipper, taking them to the dump will cost them $50 a tonne, that they have quoted and accounted for anyway but, finding someone that is willing to take it for free, is (can be) a considerable savings to the contractor as most loads are of about 10 tone at least so, $500 bucks in the pocket and many times, less distances to travel equalling, another saving in fuel, driving times and truck mileage (wear and tear=expensive vehicle services).

A further distance to travel to dump the wood at no charge, can still be a good proposition for the contractor, if time constrains aren't a major issue to the truck driver and the use of the dump truck, I suppose is all a combination of "balanced" decisions...!

Still, your best chances are always your own wood pick-up, while the job isn't over, as is the responsibility of the contractor to leave the place clean and neat so nothing can be left behind, when they live the job site...!

Getting wood from private land is a slight different situation, even if the same contractors are doing the job. Most times are the tree owners or his/hers friends that remove these trees, either because they have a use for it, or they know how to safely do the job, for a portion of the price or no cost at all...! ( sorry, certified arborists and certified tree working people, these sort of jobs will never (exceptions do apply...!) be a paid job for you and these tree jobs/situations/examples, happen everyday, everywhere in the world, and have been happening since man habited earth...!

Private tree owners, about 50% of them have some use for the wood, either as firewood or other, and you get nothing from them but, you can get as much as you can carry, if you find one that is cutting a tree, have no use for the wood as would be extremely happy of not having to take it away to a safe place for burning or, have to take it to the dump, having to do all the work and have to pay for it...! (50 bucks a tonne is the normal rate for dumping wood at the dumps...!)

If you have a chainsaw and can spare some time on the weekend, look for a chainsaw working in the area and go have a look. Go the the dump as look for any logs that you can salvage, or talk to someone like me that already went through all those steps and have extra wood stored for sale, if necessary...!

Now, the problem is to find those "special" woods you want, preferentially not still attached to the ground and showing green leafs, flowers/fruits, etc., and healthy, that would probably take a "while" before you can have it/them, and I have plenty of those around me...!
Is "nearly" a full time job just searching/looking and organizing/permissions to salvage the trees/wood but, is something that I have great pleasure in doing...!

Good luck...!

Cheers
George
