Question South Australians | Burnside Village Gum Tree

Any croweaters out there heading over (with a camera) to check out the tree? I'd like to see it but it's a bit far away.

Seems they fully enclosed this tree.

Sickly Burnside Village tree an 'illusion' - Local News - News - Eastern Courier Messenger

Is it an 11m radius TPZ or 11m diameter TPZ?

Was this tree outdoors before? I think so.

Is it now fully reliant on human life support, no more rain on the leaves, soil biota isolated and it lives indoors?

Sickly Burnside Village tree an 'illusion'

BURNSIDE Village’s much-talked-about gum tree is healthy despite its sickly appearance, according to the arborist in charge of its care.

Marcus Lodge, who has been looking after the 100-year-old river red gum for about 10 years, told the Eastern Courier Messenger he was happy with how the tree was adapting to its new enclosed environment in the centre’s mall.

“I’m not too worried about it but we’re keeping an eye on it because it’s in a new environment and this is its first summer in it,” he said.

Mr Lodge said the 18m tree was treated for scale and given a foliage stimulant in mid-December.

“By doing sprays, we were able to wash off quite a lot of the scale insects which is helping a lot,” he said.

“What happens now is the tree reacts and drops dead foliage and grows new leaves.

“It’s in a kind of transition phase.”

Mr Lodge said the tree had some dead foliage which would be trimmed in the next few weeks.

“It’s standard for what you would expect of a tree which has been in a development site,” he said.

Shopper Andre Gascoigne, of Beaumont, said the tree looked “unhappy” and less healthy since the mall opened two months ago.

“I am a little concerned about such a magnificent tree,” he said.

“It seems a little crazy to build it in. An alternative could have been a pleasant courtyard area.”

Hazelwood Park resident Katia Romano said the tree had lost its lustre.

“The leaves appear to be more yellow and not their normal silvery green and more leaves seem to be dropping which is especially noticeable when you’re sitting at Cibo,” she said.

She was worried about the tree’s long-term health if it was already showing signs of stress.

But Mr Lodge attributed the tree’s sickly appearance to an “optical illusion”.

“People are looking at it and saying it’s greyer rather than green but that’s from the tint on the roof,” he said. “The leaves are quite healthy.”

Measures to help ensure the tree’s survival were incorporated into the mall’s design.

They included a 1.2m gap in the 21m high roof to provide air circulation, an underground deck for fertilising and watering, and an 11m protection zone around the tree’s roots.

Googled Burnside Village and came up with the suburb in Victoria, was disappointed to find out it was in Adelaide, might have to remember this thread when I go to Adelaide at the end of the year.

Pretty strange decision to stick a tree of that size and age inside a shopping centre. Going off that single picture it looks like a very small TPZ because it does look like theres things like signs and people closer than 11m. It may also double as an experiment to see how trees like this can go in a more, artificial environment. What are they going to do though if it has a major failure? Can't exactly get a chipper truck in there.

There might be a light netting there, look closely at the picture to the right just below the canopy.

this tree is in a fully enclosed structure, I am concerned that the right amounts
of sunlight eg balance of uv/infrared light is now been changed to the point
that it will not photosynthesis to a required level.
Also spoke to some builders on site and they stated that a number of different chemical spills had taken place around the "protection" zone during the construction and shop fitout stages with it being clearly visable on soil around the root zone like paint and thinners etc.
As Eric has pointed out where is the replacement for rainfall, biomass for nutrient replacement and symbiotic insects/animals.
A good structured River Red is now a show piece for commercial gain because they were not allowed to remove the tree for more underground carparking
so now they are going to torture the poor thing till it dies.
sorry no photos.
