Default soil conditions

Right, here i am writing a paper on th correct soil conditions for a good tree establishment, and im wondering to myself, does a tree need the exact correct ph and soil type for a good establishment? surely a tree can in some way 'adapt itself to grow in its surrounding environment? thus making it a more hardy, strong tree?

its all about what nutrients are available based on the PH level. If it is to high then some or all perhaps will not be available (nutrients being water soluble is the issue i think) if they are to low same problem just maybe different nutrients. Different plants have different needs (to a certain degree), thus different ones thrive in slightly different ph levels. PH levels + present nutrients+ water will play a big factor in how well the plant/tree/etc will be able to perform all of its necessary functions to thrive.
A tree is going to have certain needs. those needs have to be met for it to become a "hardy, strong tree".

Also this thread.

Myth soil amendments

Plus it's worth watching the video in this one

Planting Advanced tree stock

Do consider that harsh environments can make for disease susceptible trees. You see naturally occuring forests with varying conditions, from arid plains to rainforests .... look at the species which are dominant. And at times not even the dominant species look healthy in harsh conditions, they just happen to be the few that can survive.
