Yes sadly you are right there are no VPO's as such in either LGA Townsville or Thuringowa, and I'm not saying VPO's are the answer to all of the major problems we have managing vegetation in our Urban forest, but hell it would be nice to even have an imaginary stick to wave up here once in a while.

On the rare occasion that a tree of real significance is identified as being worth protection heaven help it if its in the way of someones duplex or sixpack unit development it'll suddenly go into leaf drop never to return with the same perfectly symmetrical borer holes I'm sure you've seen in Brissy

It's a slow process driving change up here, attitudes are very intrenched, neither private nor public tree owners have yet grasped the assets they are managing but little by little we'll get there.

Yeah, they're the ryobicordless10mm borer which seem to enter the trunk at a 45 degree downward pointing angle whilst also pointing off to the left or right so the entire 2" hole bored by this critter is in the vascular cambium.

Sometimes they attack with such fierocity that they actually have scuff marks around the entry hole where there was a fight over who goes first. Others call this chuck marks as it's where some borers get chucked outta the hole and you can even see the sawdust swarf on the ground beneath.

Oh yes LOL, I'll track down the photos of a property I went out too few yrs ago where the owner noticed his young Benjaminas declining leaf drop during the wet..so approached the fence line where these young trees where planted only to see each one surrounded by a disk of dead buffallo grass at the base and a tear drop shaped pattern pointing to the 5ft chain fence

Asked the client if he thought it odd his grass seemed to be dying off only under each of the failing trees and that the pattern of dead grass looked like an enormous commar on the ground indicating who wrote the piece.

Some people are even too silly to get you mad.. either that or they just diodn't care if their neighbour comes round and shoots them for killing his little trees

Crikey yooper those temps are enough to test the keenest fella

Man i haven't touched snow in 16yrs, we get snow in Oz just not where I am, and I've skied and skated in Europe in a lifetime past.

Just this last fortnight we had rain in some of our western towns and communities for the first time in 6yrs, some of those kids had grown up never having seen rain!!! Thank the gods for the wet.

Yep, its beenlong time coming alright checked the stats on the met site here and this recent rain broke records that had stood for 68yrs in some districts, thst was as long as they'd been keeping accurate records.

http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/curren...shtml#extremes

Sure makes the survival of some of our older trees out there even more astounding

I edited a video, sharpened some chains and did some quotes. Tomorrow is an action day though.

Spent the day quoting at a school, I spent the entire day their, with an employee I might add.

We were pricing trees from a survey, supposedly carried out by a Pro consultant lol,he missed a huge leaning [root plate gone] tree with Armillaria,I called him up and said I cant find this so and so tree on the survey, and I pretty sure its shot to bits..

Out he came lol said thanks for saving his bacon lol he said one of his staff did the survey, you got to laugh..

Like I said I was running around looking at trees and working from a plan, not one of the trees had a tree tag on it.

I nearly forgot to mention ,the school are getting 6 quotes, had I have known that ,I wouldn't have bothered bidding the job,6 quotes what an insult ..

Damn Roller, where do you draw the line on this free quoting BS!

6 Quotes and guaranteed the school goes the cheapest, and what do you get for your time lost?

I went to a school here for a so called "free quote". The groundsman walked me around the school wanting to know what to do/ what's wrong with about 12 trees and write it down, they even gave me the A4 paper to do that.

So dumb ole Eric writes it all out what to do etc and hands a quote in .... never got the job, 3 hours wasted and you go past and all the work done via my spec.

Try getting a building inspection for free!!!!!!

Ekka the whole free quoting thing is a fine line. Some jobs you just have to do it that way.I'm in a little bit of a different situation where i have to find the work to keep our service guys going. For owner/operators it is a little bit different because when your not cutting something down you are not earning but you still have to find the work and apart of that is quoting.

I agree with justoon you have to free quote, if you dont most times you miss out,I've tried it comes of the total price but they sour strait away, and if your not quoteing this week your not working next.

and we whacked more palms today, glad to be finished today.
