| This thread should get everyone going... I'll tell you a story about a Flindersia australis here in the Illawarra... which through re-development suffered the most atrocious fate (aside from being outright poisoned that is). It WAS a beautiful tree, and quite uncommon planting for the Illawarra (In fact our Botanic Gardens used to collect seed from it). Well, it was constraining to the potential re-development of the particular site ...because the tree SULE rated 1a...and it had a T.P.Z. requirement of 4.0m in radius. I thought it was worthy of efforts to accomodate it and reported it as such. Anyway ... the proposal didnt get through Council (not necessarily because of the tree...there were other issues)... so things went to ground for a while. About 2 years later ... same developer...new plan...different proposal...still no regard for the tree, engaged me again to come to look at, this time, several neighbours trees for potential impacts through stormwater upgrade. I reviewed the Flindersia whilst I was there. HOWEVER, only 3 weeks before I was to go to the site, SOMEONE set a sediment hay-bale alight underneath the tree...tried to set the tree alight....such a disgraceful malicious act. (Pic attached) The poor tree...crown all seared on one side ..and the limbs superficially scorched and some blistered. I checked sap-flow, viability of green-stick twigs, and made small nicks in the bark to check the scorching depth (green under the bark). All seemed to be good with the tree (considering), but I did change the SULE to 1b - a case for remedial care (which I discussed with the developer) and the subject now requiring regular post-trauma reviews. (ie YOU STILL HAVE TO KEEP THE TREE with minor plan changes to respect the T.P.Z. as per first Arb Report.) I wrote up the inspection detail in the report.. it sat in DRAFTS until.... abt. a week or so later I got a call from Council to do an "INDEPENDENT Report on this SAME tree because they has just rec'vd an Arborist Report (from another Arborist) condemning the tree. Well I couldnt get it into the e-mail fast enough... no fee proposal or anything...I didnt charge for it. (It... for me ...was a matter of principle). ![]() So much for that ...this tree is gone now...BUT that developer went bust in April this year.. to the tune of 3m or so...and sadly a few other local building suppliers went down shortly after. Maybe there is a TREE GOD. |

| Thats a shame that was a good looking tree.Around here if you want a tree gone call someone or do it yourself no regs on how many you can remove.i hope in the near future the city will regulate it more but then again the devlopers have deep pockets.
