Default "safe" tree falls day after inspection

A BACKYARD gum tree in Kilsyth toppled last week - narrowly missing a sleeping resident - a day after being declared safe.

Marcia Ros said she had been sleeping in a backyard bungalow with her dog Angel when the tree collapsed around her at 7am on February 17.

She said she was lucky to escape injury, with several large branches landing within 20cm of the bungalow sleep-out.

“It sounded really loud, like a huge crash bang,” Ms Ros said.

“I woke up screaming. Now I’m a bit freaked out by other large trees.

“The inspector seemed to casually come in and only take a quick look at the tree. They said it was a lovely tree and was fine.”

Inspectors from the Office of Housing, which manages the house, checked the tree in the afternoon on February 16.

Their advice was that the tree did not need to be removed because it was growing away from the house and appeared healthy.

The mature gum tree tore a large chunk from the house’s back fence and destroyed its Hills Hoist clothes line.

The tree was removed on Friday, sitting in Ms Ros’s backyard through Thursday.

Office of Housing spokesman Brendan Ryan said they were organising repairs for the damaged fence and clothes line.

“Office of Housing staff visited the house as a neighbour had raised concerns that a tree was damaging the fence,” he said,

“There was no evidence of damage to the fence and the tree appeared healthy.”
