Repairs begin on plane trees - Local News - News - Environment - Warren Advocate

Repairs begin on plane trees

The tree doctor has been called in to Macquarie Park to administer some timely treatment to the avenue of plane trees that line the footpath leading to the river.

The sixteen Platanus Lindeniana “bigger leaf” trees shade the park in the summer and give a spectacular display as they change colour in the autumn before dropping their large brown leaves as the winter frosts start to bite.

Andy McReaddie and the team from McReaddie’s Nursery in Gilgandra have been busy “rounding off the trees to give them some form” and carrying out some much-needed repair work.

The soft wood trees also known as Liquid Amber or Sweet Gum live up to their sugary names by being attractive to “cockies and galahs”.

“The birds chew out the

tops and water gets in and the inside starts to rot,” said Mr McReaddie.

“A bigger branch will break off and leave a hole but the smaller branch will self-plug.”

Part of the repair work has been to fill in the holes and repair damage also caused by grubs and to make sure the trees do not become an occupational health and safety issue.

Mr McReaddie said the English-garden theme favoured decades ago when the trees were planted means “every park in Australia has a plane tree in it”.

McReaddie’s Nursery is well known in the district with work carried out at a number of well-known property gardens and seed collected from various points such as from Lemon Scented Gums near Warren Central School.

sweet gums looooove to be rounded
Especially well placed cuts as far away from a healthy branch as possible.
I know a good nursery to buy some more when these pass on

Since when is a platanus known as sweet gum? Totally different tree...genus liquidambar....

plane trees can handle reduction pruning better than most trees. They compartmentalize really well. The opposite is the case with liquidambar.
