Default Root Barriers

Hi
I require some information about root barriers.
Are they effective for containing tree roots in a courtyard, large patio area?
What trees are suited to root barriers? My understanding that a Ficus can easily break a root barrier
How are they installed?
Are they easily sourced from a manufacturer? Cost?
Durability?

I'm considering planting a shade tree such as a Jacaranda, Delonix, Harpulia,Cassia or a Tabeuia in a paved area.
Thoughts?
Cheers
Luke

Default Re: Root Barriers

The stuff I've seen used, that looks like it would work, is a thickish black plastic sheet on a roll, probably about 2-3mm thick and sturdy.

If I was doing it, I'd use the calculators here for SRZ and TPZ of the trees potential maximum size and put the root barrier in as close as you can get to the TPZ. So no pavers in that area at all, if you are considering a healthy tree that can grow into the space.

Considering that most of the roots are contained in the upper part of soil, the sheet would be nice to be at least 600mm deep and proud enough to stop surface roots but not a trip hazard in or near the pavers. Needs to be unbroken and I'd assume the join would have to overlap a fair way and maybe siliconed and screwed/bolted/stapled together.

Failure points are over the top, underneath and through the join. The sheeting is thick enough there is no chance of straight through unless it's damaged.

Don't plant Jacaranda. Up here it's just a fast growing weed. Delonix and Tabeuia are going to be very messy on the pavers, just factor in that maintenance for the client, or yourself.
