Answer given:-
Yes the petioles of the cut fronds that decorate a well kept trunk of Washingtonia can be a serious obstacle to removal of a trunk wrapped friction saver etc. Hopefully any remaining petioles have no barbs left on them, if they are cut closer to the trunk there should be none. With both ends of the rope able to reach the ground you can tie a butterfly knot (leaving a little loop) in one piece, secure it with a carabiner to the other piece then abseil down the end of rope that doesn't have the knot in it. At the bottom you pull the end of rope that has the carabiner and worse case scenario if it doesn't come down when loose you keep pulling until the end of the rope you abseiled goes all the way through the carabiner. The biner should be very strong and steel, like a 50kn etc due to the way it's loaded.
I prefer the butterfly knot over say a figure 8 knot because it is designed to be loaded so each part is strong and pulling the tail of the knot cant result in the knot rolling over.
