| just lately i've been exposed to some new ideas. for example, stubs on trees. in the past if i was prunning a tree and saw an old stub that was left by previous works i would have cut it back to the collar in an instant. we all know trees compartmentalise, if i cut the old the old stub off and expose new wood, the tree has to put all those barriers back in place to contain the potential decay / fungus etc. i guess to it depends on what type of tree....? what do you think? leave the old stub? another thing...........you have a large multi stemmed Jacaranda (30-50yrs). one of its branches is growing through and supported by the fork of a neighboring Camphor Laurel, when the Camphor is removed the Jacaranda branch is more then likely going to break of due to excessive end weight and lack of taper. There are NO targets beneath the branch, would it therefore be acceptable to LOP the Jackie branch and allow it to produce epicormics? this would minimise a large wound if the whole branch was to be removed and atleast the epicormics would still be producing food for the tree. what do you reckon? Thanks |

| You cut the stub off just the dead side ... dont cut live tissue. With the Jac branch, size does count. Reduction to something is better than a huge wound at the trunk, but I'm not for big stubs full of epicormics ... This thread hashed it out best I think. http://www.treeworld.info/f9/pruning...minant-35.html

| Treestyle if there are no targets under the branch why cut it at all? If it is likely to fail in your opinion due to the consequences of the previous conflict why not cable it with cobra or similar non invasive systems? Over time a dynamic system will permit some thickening and strengthening of the suspect limb. I'm with Eric when it comes to creating epicormic regrowth esp on a species like Jacaranda. (Vet trees is diff can o worms)
