Default Religous Stump?

Can you see Mary?

Irish say tree stump looks like Mary - Yahoo!7 News

Thousands of Irish Catholics are flocking to a church to pray at a tree stump - a recently cut-down willow that many say bears the shape of the Virgin Mary.

The 'phenomenon' at St. Mary's parish church is in the village of Rathkeale in the County Limerick.

It hearkens back to decades past when Catholic devotion and pilgrimages were a dominant feature of rural life in Ireland.

Some are tying the unexpected fervour now for Rathkeale's "Holy Stump" to Ireland's stunning economic decline over the past year.

Some Irish people have been turning their back to their religious roots.

Are people really so weak minded that they resort to this type of behavior? A tree stump? Is this a joke?

I live right next door to a church, huge place and some days they get a real rock'n thing going in there. Good on em.

It's the fanatics like these people that get to me.

Church does have benefits and is a recognised necessity in the community, but jeez, don't become a nut job over it.

Now, where's the beer God, ahhhh, that's much more effective for me.

I suspect in the current economic climate something a little less spiritual might be driving the desire to retain the stump......

Quote:
Local businessman Seamus Hogan said visitors to the area were not worshipping the willow tree stump, but Our Lady
Quote:
There are huge crowds still coming
Quote:
We had Pakistanis and people from India here today. It is drawing huge crowds," Mr Hogan said.
Perhaps it is giving them an oppurtunity to express their devotion, and well if in the meantime if them visitors might be likin a souvenir, a post card fridge magnet, a cap, or t shirt now wheres the harm in that eh father??
