Of all the links I find about trees, it seems that the redwood forest related ones are among my favorites to browse - and enjoy the images. Am hoping to find more about what plants, fungi and animals grow up in the canopies. I read a page last spring that mentioned plants growing up high in the older trees where years of dust and debris had formed a soil. Not much in the way of Redwoods here in OZ. Shame really. There is a small plantation in the Otway Ranges. I'm not on my usual pc so dont have pics. We did do some work on one just the other day though. This Sequoia sempivierens was a Listed Significant Tree. I'll put it in my pics thread and thow a link here later. It was really only a baby at about 100". |

Has anyone seen the BBC tv series "Planet Earth"? It has a fantastic sequence at the start of the "Seasonal Forests" episode that shows the scale of these trees. Its a ground to canopy pan done on a pulley cable system which shows 2* climbers jugging up. I have the DVD set so i will see if a can get the sequence as a mpeg. |

Went hiking in the redwoods yesterday. Camped the night before last at the coast, and hiked in the morning on the return. Campground is only 25 minutes away. The forest sure smelled great in autumn. There were a lot of different fungi newly emerged, both from the ground and on stumps. Here's a group from one stump that had hundreds of mushrooms. These clusters of little ones are among my favorites... |

That last image from yesterday, was on Hatton Trail which shares the same trailhead as Hiouchi trail. This next image was from last year's cool season while in Simpson Reed Discovery trail. This big mushroom is nicknamed "The Prince". The cap is about 6" diameter. |

Yeah they're HUGE. I saw a video where a team went out and did a climb. They used mar bars to get up there and then set up an elevator system. There was a lady in the group. They shot from one tree across to another and set up a traverse. There may have been some-one like a Sherrill on the team not sure ... but buggered if I know where I watched that coz I cant find it anymore.

Article seems out of date by comparison to tallest measurement from mdvadens video post. But still some fascinating information about redwoods. Here is where you enter the Redwood Cathedral "When exposed to fire, the bark forms an ablative shield, similiar to the Apollo heatshield. (The Shuttle thermal protection system--fragile, expensive, difficult to apply and maintain, was not ablative.)" Thats just COOL!! I want some of that armor!! -Daryl
