Red Palm Beatle
Hi everybody,
I have just lost a Phoenix Canariensis palm tree to the Red Beetle [Rhynchophorus Ferrigineus].
In the pictures you will see, 1 day's catch in a water trap! We are on the Costa Blanca in Spain and we have 4 traps catching around 100 beetles a day. The grubs and the rotten centre of the palm tree are in other pictures. I have used several chemical methods costing over 1,000 euros per year to protect 18 adult trees and now realise I must try to replace with a type of tree not affected by the bug, hopefull a large fan palm type will do.
So My question is. Anybody have an idea as to which variety of palm I can use or will the beetle win and take the lot?
Thank you in advance.
Simon, [Nymie]
PS Won't load more than 1 pic, will try later on new thread!!
