Hi everyone, I am new to this forum so do hope I have posted in the right section. I have a stretch of garden which borders onto my neighbour's driveway, with a large gum tree (unsure of type) at the end nearest the house. I would really like to plant some trees for autumn colour and had thought of putting 3 silver birch in, however I am concerned they won't get enough water being so close to the old gum tree. I'm also worried about causing a mess for the neighbours to clean up on their side. Can anyone give me some advice please regarding the viability of silver birch so close to a gum tree - are there any other plants that might do better in this area? Ideally I would like to screen off my neighbour's property a little bit. I live in northern Adelaide and the garden is rather dry in summer. Thanks in advance, Robyn. |

If you want to screen off your neighbours then silver birch is completely the wrong tree as it has an open form, take some pictures of the area and post them on here, you will probably need to do a soil test prior to planting to enable you to gauge the correct plant for the area.
