There's many types but generally they suck!

You need to know the bore wing cut and frankly if you dont one hand with a top handled saw you'll be to darn slow!

First of all Ole Jim1NZ found out about the problem in the pics of this thread, I've linked to the post from where you need to read on, look at the pics.

Jim1NZ downunder

And I must have overlooked posting that video here on TW, but it's there now, this is also another person new to palms getting caught.

The Bore wing|borewing| bore-wing cut for palms

Here's one of the pics.

High maintenance!!!! Your right there mate.
High maintenance on saws, gear, chipper (if you chip). They're darn heavy and out here people lurv having a gazillion of them around their pool
There are alot worse than the ol' weed coco's palm, you get used to them and they do bring in alot of work

Definately an aquired taste and technique as Ekka described

I know this is a really vague question, but I'm lookin for a ballpark answer.

Say you've got a palm that's 12" dia. What would a 12" tall block of that weigh? (for a live palm) Again, I know I didn't say what type of palm and such, just throw me a rough number for poundage. I guess I didn't realize how heavy the darn things are.

Fear is there to keep you alive....And when it goes wrong Pain is there to tell you you're still alive!

With a bit of one, you shouldn't have the other!

Well, most palm logs sink in a salt water pool so they weigh more than 1000kgm3

Based on that and assuming your palm is 0.3m dia and a piece is cut 0.3m high, the volume of such a piece would be 0.02121m3

Multiply that by 1000 is 21.21kg or 46.76lb

Palms are great fun to takedown with great challenges and rewards IMO.

My most challenging/funnest Palm td was probably a 12 metre Washy with a full beard. Everything was good about that job. I conquered my first full bearded washy (thanks Trev for the basic technique) and I got the exact price I asked for it.

Not one wasp. But a bird flew out at me

The whole time Ive been climbing trees I've never once been bitten by anything whilst in the tree. On the ground I've been bitten by a huntsmen spider and some bug that loves blackbutts, but that's it.

You get a lot of bugs and wasps in those here. I'd say it was one of those itchy caterpillars that got ya in the blackbutt or a stink beetle pissed on ya!

Got a few cuts before I put on my gloves, after that I was fine.

Nah it wasn't a stink bug or an "itchy" bug. I was chipping the canopy and It bit me under my 3 layers of shirts. It kinda looked like a roach but had a more gnarly look. It had big straw like feelers, black and orange and a nice set of fangs on it. Every blackbutt I've cut down has them...

Having never worked on a palm before I am trying to
understand the science. Trimming them is mainly taking
the dead fronds off close to the head without damaging
it and fronds that stalks grow downward am I correct?
Do you cut the with a saw or knife? Does it suck to trim
them without spurs and where should you position to
cut them? Do you I suppose create a false crotch?

I have been bit by at least one,my worst worry since getting nailed and
having to bailout is baldfaced hornets and scorpions! I jumped near 15
feet to evade hornets once, got stung many times and could not take
it anymore so unhooked and jumped, my stinking knot was sappy and
did not want to cooperate it really sucked. Sprang my ankle and limp
ran to the truck and even though not allergic had to go get a shot
on that one was starting to pass out!

I have seen some people use a bull line with a pulley to thread the climb line from the ground and then anchor it to the base of the tree with a portawrap.I suppose you could even use foot loops but I use hooks on them.I don't trust fronds to hold my weight.you got the trimming pretty much down but its best like any tree[if you can call them that]to take as little living foliage off.You use a chainsaw or handsaw.[you could use a knife if you want to heman it]

Thanks it is interesting! I will probably never have the opportunity
to climb a palm but like the out of norm to learn more on differences
in other regions!
