Well, they just sort of look up and point and go, yeah that one too. Then we look up and go ... ... crikey, that's bad, that'll be $90 for that one. And they look at you like you just fleeced them of their life savings. But here's a comparison from what they see first to what we see second. This is a Syagrus romanzoffiana, cocos palm. ![]() And what we see, notice the little comment down the bottom.

Those seed pods will just drop off by themselves after a while. The only thing a homeowner needs is a good sturdy ladder and a polesaw to trim off the lowest level of fronds as they die back. No need for the 'pros' to get involved here |

In most palm they will, but in cocos palms they will stay unless they are cleaned.

It was advertised in the Arborage back in 1998 circa. A guy from the Gold Coast invented an aluminium platform you stand in to work palms. Similar to pole platforms used by telco's and power companies it basically gripped the trunk and you could stand in it and do ya job. Too slow, first you have to get it up there, then get a ladder to climb in it, do ya thing then lower it a bit for the next bit of work. Back then the guy called himself 4x4 Rubbish Removals with a 4wd 4.495t gvm Canter truck. I think he lived Benowa/Biggera Waters area.

Ahh yes i know the thing thing your talking about. Good idea just awkward and time consuming to set up.This is where the whole no spike thing is going though, either EWP or a low impact climbing device.Dont have to reinvent the wheel just have to refine and develop ideas more.Nice photos by the way but have seen those suckers in much worse condition. Is that tree one of your regulars.

was it a case of "Another Palm Slain by Ekka" or more of a case of "That price is outrageous".

Hey, that's a cocos palm with the cage on it. Imagine how much all those stinking ripe berries are gonna weigh and the pong from it ... ... be like berry juice dripping out of it along with a dash of bat guava. lol Kill'm all I say, filthy things those cocos palms. Disgusting. There's nice palms, how big do the majestic's get up your way? They dont seem to have frond and fruiting hazards ... never cleaned one in 10 years!

We get some big ones and its not a case of them worring about fruit rather heavy fronds falling in public places.Mackay has a heap of them in their CBD and ANZAC park. The royals in this area are all heritage listed. As for the Cocos palms they are also on a maintenence program so the basket does not get anywhere near full.During trials we left one under a cocos for 12months without maintaining it to see what would happen. It filled half the net but didnt stink and caught all those little berries.A well maintained Cocos palm actually is a nice looking Palm you just have to keep on top of it. |

You could save the council a lot of money and do what the botanic gardens do here with the cubans in the carpark ... strap them and service less frequently.

Ekka we do a similar only a little bit higher and clear strapping. The aborist for the council has his quirks and didnt want to use it,opting instead for a split of 6 monthly and 3 monthly servicing.

Hi Folk's, Thought you mite like to see this, We quoted this palm removals job the other day and here we have a home owners answer to droping berries..we asked him was he aware that the baskets were available commercialy,he said no,so we gave him a pat on the back and a " A " for ingenuity we whacked 8 palms from his backyard a few days later,..all up the job took about 4 hrs not to bad when you consider we were droping these palms between a well maintained and tightly planted garden, his wife talked our heads of after we finished..no damage to her plants,we left this job feeling good. So true Ekka, the customer doesn't see what we see, and its easy for the untrained eye to get a truck load of waste for $40 bucks..LOL it's a steep learning curve with palms.

This is an old pic pre digital on my website, sometimes you have to remove a whole whirl of fronds. You can cut flush or a step or chamfer angle etc on the old butts, depends on what was done before a little and what's done to others nearby.... here I cut about a 45 degree angle, on big fat bowl heads I'll cut square steps The step is good if you want more security for your flip line, something to stand on to get the high pods. ![]()

And what makes this all the more interesting now is the 2007 revised Australia Standards of Pruning (AS4373-2007) P17 Section 7.4 states:- Quote:

Ekka 90 bucks, lucky you. All my palms out here look worse then that one you showed, all have never been done. Well I was 75 but gone back to 60 bucks, just sounded more affordiable for them.Did five like that on Monday for 300 neat. Did one three weeks ago for a lady, she had two to do, when I said sixty bucks each she said I'm not paying that for just cutting a few things out of a palm just do the one.It always amaz's me how supprized they are at the amount of shit on the ground.Guess what, she called me up to do the other one,I suppose I had the last laugh. She had done most of it her self with a ladder so I only charged her 30 bucks, seemed far i suppose.

This is something I see as I get around, a home owner risking his life for the sake of a couple of dollars, no ropes on the ladder or the ladder climber, mum down the bottom being a puesdo brace giving dad a false sence of security....this bloke will probably keep doing this until he ends up stuck in the ground up to his ankles.... ![]() ![]() For the sake of a couple of dollars...

Yeah I see it often. They wait till the ladder doesn't reach anymore then ring, to get them removed. Got a call on Monday, he got 5 down by himself but the one between the power wires, cable tv & phone needed a pro. I rushed over straight away of course. |
