"Wouldn't mind seeing the exact clearances they are proposing though"

The 2010 reg clearances are copy paste of the 2004 but they removed an important exemption that allowed scaffold limbs or light leaf trespass near lv insulated. Likey a bun fight as election year but I reckon the fall back position to save votes for state gov will be along the lines of the 10/30 fire planning exemption for home owner trees. 10/30 follows the urban boundary so inner to outer Melb suburbs ie the greener voter heart land saved.

Ha low line in Camberwell I recall 66kv that gotta be so low your steel caps buzz n hair stands up as you walk under it.

Later I'll post the new regs link and some pictures showin possible effects.

So with service wires going into houses we are going to have to clear it for 1m around, even removing limbs thicker than a man's thigh? Thats going to result in valleying of more trees, except the valley facing a different direction.

The most sense -- in the long term would be to bury the lines, and save the trees. Shorter term -- plant trees that tend towards valley formation or develop forms for several species that have a tighter columnar form. And of course, pass a bylaw that plants under lines can only have a maximum height of half the height of the lines; plant the taller trees on the other side of the street.

Joyess times. Going to have an interesting result on some houses. Sometimes you find the telephone/cable line being supported by branches which would be removed, now we end up with super low hanging lines across the street. At least it won't be too bad up my way, we have hit the Melaleuca's pretty hard.

I have a lopped Euc/Corymbia branch on the border of my property. It was cracking and twisting so we rang Energex. They 'lopped' it in line with the boundary 6 months ago. Funny thing is, there is now some epicormic growth lying on top of the line.

And I saw a large Ficus hillii 'butchered' today, or caught a glance at it. The tree, maybe 10m high and 15m wide was cut almost directly in half to protect a single line (don't know my line classifications). The wound on the tree from branch removal is probably 400 x 300 so it was in place for a long time.

I may be exaggerating, but it looked brutal. Interested in pics of the hillii?

They are only opinions. As long as you give credit, where credit is due - should be ok. You could always send a message-email to specific parties for permission.

Seen this awesome service wire clearance @ Reservoir station the other day. Larger Euc limb, cut back approx 5m from the LV service wire heading into the outbound station side.

Tell me you Victorian tree people.

What started the 2009 bush fires?

What was burning?

And why wasn't it put out quickly?

.......... I bet the answers have little to do with urban service drops and LV lines.

A powerline from the city that set fire to a plain tree which then teleported to the bush started the fires :P

The fire that killed the most started by a failed 12600v Swer line dropin in dry grass at Kilmore east. It was about 11am already 34c winds 70 to 90 ks and building. Once it was going on that day no CFA crew could do squat poor sods could just watch it burn up the hill and away.

Still no real evidence of fire or know risk has been offered by state regulator from home service wires in city or country.

It's rare they start by lightening.

Often they start from cigarette butts and broken glass.

Sometimes they start from sparks from electrical wires.

In almost all cases the fuel which burns is on the ground, is dry grass and dead sticks. One of the problems was the high fuel levels on the ground. Hard to slash a forest or mow half of Victoria so it comes down to fire breaks, vehicle access, early reporting and quick action unlike some woman who wined and dined whilst Victoria burned.

Everyone has gotta eat bro, may as well do it in style.

Also ESV has done a bit of a back flip on their new laws. They are gonna do more tailored policies for every council, but the council has to give good reason as to why the trees should stay. If councils don't partake in negotiations then the harsh rules get applied.

Possible to get a copy, always interested in positives/negatives when it comes to trees and powerlines.
