Hi, The council have just removed a large Horse Chestnut from their land at the side of my house and replaced it with an Oak which is only 8 foot high at the moment. The horse Chestnut was 16m from my house wall which was not a problem but the new Oak is only 11m from my house wall and gives me some concern about problems that can develop in years to come. I have read that oaks should be 18m away from foundations so would I be in order putting in a complaint and try to get it repositioned. The original tree was not removed below ground level so does not give many alternative positions (apart from removing roots) due to a garage at one side and close to the estate road on others but not near any other houses. Any help would be appreciated. |

Get root barrier installed at the fenceline. ![]() More damage is caused by subsidence, what sort of soil you got? Here we get ratings based on the type of movement you'd get from wet to dry soil. But if you have a stable soil, maybe sandy then not a lot will happen.

If it has a small root ball, why don't you just dig up the tree and replant it -- the council prob doesn't keep track of where the tree was planted on the property - so move it. If you ask them, and they refuse, they will make an especial note of it.
