Default Noob looking to break into tree work

Here's my situation: I live on a foundation property with dozens of trees that will need to come down for various reasons. Mostly pines.

Others have come and taken advantage of the proprietors by grossly overcharging to take out large trees. I aim to do the work moving forward.

I need to learn all the fundamentals and secure the proper equipment and safety gear. I plan on being here with my family for a long time so there is no rush for me to get started. I can practice climbing and technique before undertaking the work.

I have a lot of respect for this line of work and take safety very seriously. I have used chainsaws and being on roof tops in my former job. This is different.

I don't know if I can get an instructor out here in person. Where should I start and what resources should I use to begin learning this trade?

Thanks in advance.

Jim

I'm pretty busy nowadays, but maybe if i get a weekend of or something i could drive up there and show you a few things.I'm fixing to leave the industry anyway some I'm sure I'll be parting with gear and saws.Or maybe if you want you can take a drive down and watch me work.

Wow, newguy18. Good luck with MMA fighting. I've been a fan since UFC 1.

I've watched just about all of them and even worked with a promoter in Denver, CO at one point. I with you all the luck. Will you be training with Seth Petruzelli down there?

There's no way I could get down to Orlando. Crazy, but I just moved from Lake Mary in November. I was just listening to Monsters in the Morning yesterday on my computer.

Definitely let me know if you get up this way. I'll come out and support you bro.

Good luck new guy you will need it but if you have the head for it then you will be fine as fighting is 80% mental and 19% physical and 1% luck

A good way to start off is to find employment as a ground worker for a local tree company.
Then you can observe the techniques used in tree work and get paid for it. You might even realise that the prices charged for the removal of the trees on the property were not over priced at all.
This is hard work and not suited for all people.

In Australia we could recommend Tafe they can teach you the basic in around a year, in America apart from what i've already mentioned I really do not know.

Thanks for the input. I'm not in the position to be an under study at the moment. My job by day is scrapping mobile homes. I have no heavy equipment. Just a couple sledge hammers and a sawzall. I load steel for the scrap yard. I'm used to hard work. My main concern is the safety aspect. I can think I'm as tough as nails, but one wrong move up a tree with a chainsaw.... I need to get my head around this.

It would be simpler to have a tree service drop the trees on the ground, and you do the cleanup. Much safer. Costs more, but don't have to worry about all those neat (and not so neat) things that happen to good people in trees.

Probabley lightweight, there's 3 MMA gyms in the Orlando area, but for now I'm sticking with finishing training in ninjutsu,no one else seems to put time into that so it should give me an advantage.

Thanks, I'm looking into training in one of their gyms later on,but first i need to finish up mastering ninjutsu. Cool, you worked with a promoter? that's awesome. I might be up by Atlanta sometime in may, maybe i can start you off with basics.

I ran into a guy by luck who is showing me tree climbing and cutting basics. I couldn't be more happy. Today we did a job requiring a crane. Great stuff.

What would we need to bring for climbing gear, ect. If we came down? Do you think there is enough work all over the area to warrant us coming down there for a couple weeks? We only have about 3 jobs lined up in the Que total up here in North Georgia.

we? you and your wife? I guess bring a rope, saddle, spikes and a lanyard. You do realize I'm just a freelance climber right? I'm sure there's work here, with companies. Try a big company like Davey, valley crest,or asplunduh.

I was thinking about bringing the guy who's showing me the ropes down there. We were talking about it. Me? I'm just a dude that could work ground crew. I was thinking about bringing the experienced climber down with.

I'm having so much fun working with him that we are making a habit of it these days. We went out today and did another crane job with a huge pine leaning on a poplar. Or was it a maple? I'm still learning. Anyway the job was something else. He did all the cutting while hanging from the crane. When he released the pressure, the supporting tree snapped back into position and the pine thundered to the ground while he remained in the middle, hanging from the boom.

The entire ground crew stood in awe of the danger we just witnessed.

I'm learning that the on lookers at all the jobs we've been on so far all turn to me and confide that they thing tree climbing is for crazy SOB's.

No problem, one guy can't possibly do all the trees in a given area. Busy season is starting yet again so I'm sure you guys will be getting pretty busy soon enough.I'm fortunate that I have one company who I can call anyday and go make 150- 200 bucks or more a day cash just for doing all his climbing.
