Default No trees, please?

What benefits could trees possibly create in an urban environment?

Bronx movement takes root: No trees, please

NEW YORK (AP) — What's not to like about a tree?

Apparently plenty, if you live one New York City neighborhood.

The New York Daily News says some residents in the Bronx are fuming over the city's plans to plant trees on their block.

They say the roots will eventually crack the sidewalks — and they'll be stuck with the repair bills.

Opponents also fear that fully grown trees will damage their homes, clog sewer drains and entangle power lines in the borough's Mott Haven neighborhood.

Parks officials did not comment on the residents' specific concerns. But they said careful thought goes into each tree planting.

Well some of their concerns are legit. Old trees around here are constantly ruining sidewalks and the homeowners get stuck with the repair bills. If you don't fix them the town fines you. If someone falls and gets hurt you get sued. Maybe planting those trees next to a sidewalk isn't such a good idea after all. The only caveat is that it's likely that all of the people complaining will be dead before any of those trees actually become a problem.

Yeah I heard something about the home-owner being responsible for the footpath over there. Not fair if that's the case.

This news story seems to me to be like so many others more beat up than anything else.

The knowledge as to how to install trees into the urban landscape and provide adequate soil volume free from negative impacts to permit health and stable growth....whilst permitting the normal function of footpaths, roads and services has been around for over 10yrs.

The US has more examples of projects where this has been successfully done than we do here in Oz.

There is no free lunch, the enormous benefits that large spreading shade trees provide requires a long term commitment to the known growth requirements such trees have.

What? They didn't mention that some trees produce pollutants like biogenic volatile organic compounds that can contribute to the formation of ozone and carbon monoxide?????

We have a bunch of camphors where I'm at that were planted along sidewalks in the 70's.

Not exactly an eco-friendly tree. Not to mention absolue sidewalk shredders.

Whoever decided to plant liquidambar everywhere was a real genius too...

The pollution caused to maintain certain sp. (with "modern" equipment) far outweighs the enviromental benefits.

At least it's shady in the summer...(cough, cough)
