Default Mystery Burning Wood

Hi Folks,

I have a question about some fire wood I cut down years ago, that long ago I can not remember what type of tree it was....

This wood even with the thickest blocks you could lite with a match.. then it burns like it has been immersed in some sort of fire accelerant ! and it burns like this until it is all consumed. I'm certainly glad I have a slow combustion fire as I feel you would lose control of it in an old open fire place.

So my question to any one that has came across this timber that burns like this is what type of tree does come from...????

Not some kind of Ash? Saying that tho, I don't have a fire place and know squat about firewood, as long as it burns its win.

Even though this wood has been seasoned for around 4/5 years you can still see clear like varnish type resin on the split timber thats has a slight tacky feel...this stuff made my chimney glow like an electric oven it burnt so hot and furious.

Could be Poplar. I have it here, and I call it go for wood. Throw an arm load on, go for more. . Throws a heck of a heat, as well, and burns fairly fast. Bruce.

Ash, is a fairly hard wood, and takes a fair bit of time, to consume it. I heat both my house, and work shop with it, during the winter months, and I'm from the Great White North. Bruce.

Except for the resin, I would suggest Black Locust - burns hot, and with the oils burns long, and is a very heavy and dense wood. If you have Larch, it too burns hot and certainly has resin, Do you have any left to give us a better description?

My initial thought was it is just a chunk of fire wood posting a picture of it would be silly ??

One of the guys at work describe some wood exactly the way you have JayD, except he is away atm. The tree he was talking about is an NZ pine, common tree they have over there. When he comes back I'll get a name off him.

Here is a picture of the mystery wood burning in my fireplace, it's the piece on the left side of the fireplace, you can see it is burning with more intensity than the brushbox which looks as though it's not burning well, but it is....

my son no sooner placed this wood into our fireplace and it was burning furiously.
