Default Milling a Single Tree

Hi,

I live in Melbourne Australia and am about to cut down a large lemon scented gum.

I would like to be able to use the timber for something on site so its poor soul doesn't get lost.

You might gather it is a reluctant felling.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

If you have a big enough saw and long bar, and a ripping chain and a chainsaw mill -- or access to a bandsaw mill (there are also people for hire with bandsaw mills)- you can slab the trunk into planks. Generates lots of sawdust. Then either air dry the lumber - stickering it properly -- or get it kiln dried. Air drying is slow - rule of thumb is one inch of thickness per year. Then you are ready to go. THis is a labour of love -- usually costs far more than the lumber is worth, unless the tree has sentimental value, or is a wood not commercially available.

have a look on the internet at lyctus borers vs lemon scented gum/spotted gum. the sapwood is highly susceptible but there are ways of applying treatment.

I often salvage these gums up here (Nth Qld) and have a mate who mills or slabs them. Up here they did often have a thick sapwood in city areas due to watering regimes but maybe the new water meters might lead to a lot less domestic watering in town.

Before we sell any of this timber we have to consider the lyctus issue, it is regulated in Qld (and I think NSW at least)- can't sell untreated lemon-scented/spotted gum timber with sapwood.

great timber nonetheless.
