Default Loppers prune(lop n top) at school

I was clearing a dead hippocastanum at a cemetery today and noticed these next door in the local high school car park. this school has 80- 100ft trees next to classrooms all over the property imagine these hacks getting hold of them god help us. So I approached a teacher to ask who had carried out the work but she didn't know her words were"well they had a van like yours, how are we suposed to know how good they are? we live in a small town, you use whoever is recomended by people" so i said ok if you need a plumber or electrician would you just get anyone to do it or do they have to be suitably qualified (blank look) and the head was unavailable, so i called the County council to find out if they had any minimum qualification standards for people carrying out tree work on school properties within Lincolnshire and was informed that there was a minimum of 5 million liability insurance needed WTF
So any one with a basic chainsaw cs qualifacation and 5 mil insurance can work on trees in schools again No pruning standards to work to, i have instigated an investigation into the pruning of these trees by the county tree officer who is going to call me in a couple of days once they have seen them,
now ive heard on the grape vine there is a central company that subs out the work (ring any bells eric i.e Qbuild) so the next step might be to talk to them and get the low down on standards for schools. then get some put in place that should be fun.

im not letting this go, i don't want an accident happening because the auths cant be bothered to worry about the three tons of wood being badly looked after that is hanging over the sixty kids below.

Good work, and good on you!

What's the point of pruning standards, training, certification etc if that is the type of work and competition you are up against?

Of course the argument will be that they "pollarded" them and have intention of regular up keep etc. However correctly pruned, crown lifted for pedestrians, directionally pruned for infrastructure would mean a healthy tree that wouldn't need annual hacking.

Keep us informed, good work.

Here's some more of their butcher work......

Actually, i take that back. Butchers are trained, skilled, qualified trades professionals.

Its just sickening this whole industry i feel,No matter if you train employees or hire the best available these things are the norm.

And if you dare charge for a good pruning job or can get a difficult job done quickly your looked upon as a rip off!!!Cant win either way.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

The glass is either half full or half empty. Its all a matter of your perception. Personally I cringe when seeing that sort of work in real life or here at Treeworld. But I do not allow it to change my attitude. Keep spreading the good word mate. Things will change, arbor standards will improve and we will gain the recognition that other trades have in the eyes of the general public.
