and another one Branch-Out Tree Service (808) 572-1636 these guys im working on next. many of the arbs here in hawaii have tried time and again to help educate these guys why topping is bad and most of the time these hacks just dont wanna hear any of it and act like they know more then us. most of the time time they get violent so we just report them to the ISA and they loose thier certification number and the ability to advertise as ISA certified. speaking of, the ISA has stepped it way up recently in the policing this stuff dept.

I know what you are doing and it's the best you can do but if they deliberately top a tree what law or regulation have they broken? They may have broken the ISA's ideals but so what?

Is there a pruning standard they have broken? Breaking standards is also not illegal however it is a guideline that should be used for best practice unless otherwise warranted. If a client asks for topping and they deliver a topping I still doubt that is illegal.

These people may not be acting in the best interest of trees by ignorance or defiance, who knows. They might change their ways, they have the gear and are making the cuts, all they have to do is cut elsewhere to target.

that is very true eric. thats why its up to us to enforce proper tree care. i could care less if they didn't use the ISA logo. the issue i have is if they are using the logo and are topping trees, what does that say about small arborist like me? it means when people associate the ISA logo with topping they start expecting that of me and others who are real tree care specialists. if they didn't have the ISA logo id leave it alone.
in the state of hawaii there is a law for tree contractors. if they are caught topping trees they are liable to loose there contractors license and a fine of up to $50,000.

For real?! Thats frakking epic, if that was in force down here that would be awesome.

If you look at the tree in the picture it actually looks like its been properly pollarded in the past but someone got these nubs in to ruin the pollard

This is a picture of a customer's pollard crepe myrtle, they do it themselves annually.

I have known this customer some 6 years now and I did not do it, they do it themselves.

This home-owner effort far exceeds what most tree companies do.

arghhh, crepe myrtles dont need much at all in the way of pruning, such beautiful, slow growing trees that is butchering (even if they are the owner)....

perfect example and specimen to show why topping is bad.

i like how the guys that try to act like topping is ok for safety call it pollarding. makes it sound a smidge less harsh at least.
