Default Lanyards and hand saws

for those of you that use them all the time good for you, I use it all the time when im using a chainsaw because it makes sence, but im not going to lie up until about an hour ago i didnt use it all the time, (oh its just a hand saw it wont cut my line), now im not even take it out without having a lanyard on. ive been climbing for about 5 years and not alot of people i know use a buck strap when they are trimming but today in school, our instructor did a demo of how fast a good hand saw will cut a 13mil line. he sat in his system with an old rope while standing on the ground, while he was talking he leaned back and just grazed his rope with his hand saw, he was sitting in the snow bank before i knew what was going on. It was a real eye opener, i wish i had of got it on video to show you guys because im not doing it justice, but try it the next time your sitting at the shop with and old peice of rope in the rafters or off the back of the truck. just dont hurt yourself. youll be surprised

cheers

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if more arborists cut their lines with handsaws than chainsaws. It seems that a lot of people forget how stinkin' sharp those suckers are. I know I did until about a month ago when I shredded the entire tip of my thumb with one.

Great point.

I like my silky how it is nowa days, although a brand spanka would be great. My silky is old and dull but still cuts thru wood pretty fast, but doesn't cut my hands as fast anymore

The reason of cutting lines has alot to do with why it is industry standard to tie in TWICE, so you get your second chance.

Only time I ever had a work injury was with my Silky Sugoi.
Almost took the end of my thumb off, had to come out of the tree and bandage everything.

Taught me alot about work postioning, and trying in twice while cutting with anything sharp is just a good idea.

About 2 weeks ago we were sitting in the shop on a snow day and I wanted to try cutting a rope with a hand saw. I found some old Blue Streak that has been sitting around the shop for years and used that. I sat in it and used my current hand saw to cut it. My saw is a Fanno that is still fairly sharp. It took me about 5 hard swipes to cut the rope. I was supprised how much effort it actually took to cut the rope. I always heard a loaded rope will cut pretty easy. My little experiment showed the opposite. I still wouldnt want to do that in a tree. Just thought I would share my little test.
