Question Landscapers

Just got done pricing a job for a landscaper. I always am getting tree work from one guy, and now i have two guys flowing work into me. I am finding it very profitable to keep them happy. Was woundering how you guys work with landscapers ie: money, speed of getting to there work, and ownership of job is it yours or the other guys?

The client is there's in most cases and I bill the landscraper ... occasionally the client gets hand balled to me though.

Biggest problem I face is that most of the time the landscraper wants malpractice pruning performed, same for the landscape architect. Of course removals aren't the problem.

Having a recent discussion with the landscape architect, who is degree qualified, I learnt they do no study on trees and pruning other than a basic tree ID. The guy I was talking to said I had explained and showed him more than their course and he agreed it was absurd for them to make existing tree pruning recommendations etc when they have no competence in it.

Maybe your landscrapers and architects are educated differently?

It's a mixed bag as far as the type of work they refer, but it has been slower due to the drought here.

I find the mower men and gardener maintenance style type of guys (not true landscrapers) are very price demanding and have little regard for proper work ... I do little for them as they prefer low ballers.

On a recent job the landscaper told the client after I left to top all the trees rather than replace them as I suggested. I wrote to their association about it but as usual no response from the heathens.

Thats funny, I used to work for one of the larger companies in eastern end of Long Island NY, and I was told to only worry about the trees. During that I would watch the " landscapers" prune the shurbs and such.... butcherd the terd out of it all. Got me so mad but I was told to keep quit and mind my own. One day had one of the owners approch me about it, seeing how I was the only one that spoke english. I skipped around the answer. whent back the next day gave them the truth and he mde me the head grounds man. After that I never stood for anything less then perfection. But where I am now I am very hard and up front with the landscapers, at the end I have there respect and some jobs. After all I am only 24 if I dont stand up at the start I will be run over.

That's the best way to kick it off, be upfront and do the right thing. You'll be working with the right guys then and not arguing about hat racking and filling up 2' of soil around a tree.

At the school my kids go to not long ago my Mrs came home and mentioned the new gardener was making mulch volcano's around the trees ... do I have anything I can print out and give to the school etc?

Sure, got some guff together. So the next day she goes to the office, gets hold of a senior and mentions it to them and how it needs to be mulched ... she was complaining to the gardeners wife!

Very cool reception but they quickly fixed the volcanos.

Its weird you saying this as i have seen so called reputable gardening companys here in scotland pruning shrubs with strimmer equipment what a bloody mess this gets right up my nose when i see this done and they still get paid by the company who hired them so who's to blame, the gardening company or stupid twits who hire them and let them get away with it.

6 of one and half a dozen of the other. I stand by the belife that the person doing the work/company is the sole owner of the end product. For example if you come upon a job where someone had trimed it before and left stubs everywhere, then it is up to you to fix it. The reason being after you go away and someone down the line comes and asks who did the work you want them to see only good work not stubs. The customer is only going to give your name/company, not the other guy.
