Default Job Description... 'Tree Surgeon'

I quote..

"Tree Surgeon

Inspects, diagnoses, advises on and treats trees and shrubs to improve their health and appearance.

Tasks
  • Examines trees to assess their condition and determine treatment
  • Lops limbs off trees and shapes branches using chain or handsaws
  • Paints protective materials over cut surfaces
  • Scrape decayed materials from cavities in trees and inserts plastic to prevent further deterioration
  • Sprays and dusts trees to control insects and disease
  • Fells diseased trees, grubs out stumps and removes material
  • Plants and transplants trees"

I have come across this job description of a "Tree Surgeon" on the Australian Visa Bureau website..

I'm hoping that the visa bureau have made the mistake of taking wording from a very old piece of legislation when they say that some of the tasks involved are, painting over pruning cuts & filling cavities with plastic!?? I'm know that Australia is aware of what should and shouldn't be done... what's this all about, am I missing something?

I'll be sure to speak to them about this and get them to update it as this could encourage the general public to do this to their trees if they happen to come across this description.

Do you do this?

I know exactly what you mean. Getting a little off topic now...
It's a shame that so many people aren't aware of what an Arborist is, what we do and why we do it.

That just says you don't make a big enough impression in the public eyes for them to remember arborists are a valuable part of the economy. Since most people have trouble remembering events from yesterday, never mind knowing what a small fraction of the professionals do, it is no wonder Arborists have a tough time being recognized as important people.
And for most people, trees offer aesthetics, shade and are really dirty, requiring constant cleanup. Few people seem to look higher than 10 feet, and never really know how the tree is doing, and are astonished when there is a problem. Trees, and arborists are just taken for granted, and are ignored until there is a problem.
So you need to make a bigger, ongoing impression. And who is going to pay for that?

And the best part of the ad? Under Minimum requirements? No data exists !

Just remember that when someone does not know what an arborist does, think of all those poor geologists, oncologists, apiarists, astrobiologists, meteorologists, ornithologists out there.
