Two other publication they send, one is the Equipment Locator. Another very helpful mag is the
Buyer's Guide.

Here's a nugget of gold I discovered in there...

I've read so much from Dr. Shigo, but know very little about the man himself. This DVD, just reading the description, fills a gap in my library. If not for my membership, there's a chance I'd have missed this one.

So before when I posted here I said how much membership in professional organizations is important to those of us in isolated areas, isolated in the sense of having minimal direct contact with other industry professionals, and/or seminars, meetings, get togethers and trade shows. I still hold that to be true.

That being said, it is getting very tedious in that it takes well over a month for said organizations magazines to get here! The very item that I want and need!
It is now May 2nd, I have YET to get TCIA for April, ISA Scientific Journal for March or ISA Arborist News for April!

When I have asked questions, the reason I get it that the mail is sent by a bulk mail service...not their fault...cop out!! The International member is getting a raw deal here!
TCIA membership is $318 per year...that makes their magazine $26.50 per issue, it doesn't cost them anything much to email the Reporter and Tree Worker, (I did ask for hard copies but they are not available).
The members discounts on resources, books and merchandise are nice, but I still pay over and above my membership to buy them...for the amount I would save with a members discount, I can buy a lot of books for the $$ I'm putting out in membership.

OK, had a rant, I'll send another email to the respective organizations, the little people are falling through the cracks!

The little people are the body of the organization. I think the nerve center needs a poke.

Up front in the TCIA mag are the names of all the board members, their e-mails and phone numbers.

I would be glad to drop a friendly e-mail on behalf of my little people friend in Bermuda. Waiting a month is just not reasonable. I just got the credit card bill for my membership, $394. I payed that willfully and I'll ask if they would be willing to scrape a bit of that off to cover any additional cost to expedite the monthly copy to you.

If you were NOT a member, they would send it out free, and it would cost them just as much and it would get there in the same time it does now. As a paying member I just think they should skip the bulk system and just get it there to you, like for the rest of us.

Yes?

This is the only complaint I've had with TCIA in 14 years, and it's not really even my complaint!

I attended the Milwaukee Expo last time it was in Milwaukee, and just had a blast. Met Mike Maas, JP Sanborn, Nickrosis. There's a good chance, Treeseer.

But why cannot they have these expo's in the dead of the slow season?

Arbor expo, back in beginning of eighties, the first of all the big expo's was in the winter.

Both their publications take a long time to land on the doorstep in Australia too.

Thanks TM, I am going to contact them before I renew...if I need some support I'll draft you!
I reckon if I'm paying $318 that SOME of that can be applied to sticking a $2 stamp on my magazine!

Trev, if it takes a month to get 600 miles offshore of the US, with over 10 flights a day coming from the eastern seaboard, what chance do you think you have buddy!!!

There's different UPS charges, seems obvious they take the cheapest one.

I can get a chainsaw from USA in a week, in fact 3 working days was the record.

On the other hand I had one take 3 months when it went std UPS.

So the solution would be for them to upgrade the mailing of non USA mail to a better service.

Another option is for the mags to be online and members be able to view them with a special log in code. They could be put into a file type that cannot be downloaded or printed.

Not a fix for Bermie cuz internet is slow, but it is nice to have it online. Arborist News is not online, but ISA has a lot of free stuff at their website.

The TCIA is online, but the thing is, its better to have that mag right in your hands, apart from the obvious issues with dialup, I just don't get the same enjoyment from reading an article online, clicking and waiting...I like to scan the whole mag quickly front to back when I first get it, then take my time reading various bits when I have time.
Sometimes thats coolin' out on the couch or out in the garden, I am NOT lugging the laptop around to do that! Call me a tactile, global learner...for the teachers out there, you know what I mean!

I have emailed ISA and TCIA this weekend, to explain the problem, and I await their reply!

Good move; let us know what they say. I work enough with both that i'd like to think (fantasize?) they would listen...maybe something could be snuck into the August Dendro, like..."Codit ran into the office with a bundle, yelling 'Hey, here's the August Arborist News, and it's not even October yet! They musta fed that turtle some caffeine!'"

Here's the update, and I must say I am pleased!

TCIA, Brenda French of the membership services co-ordinator, emailed me back within two days to say they were going to work on the problem, yesterday they came back to say they were going to experiment by sending two magazines by different routes and for me to let them know which one gets here first. Really a personal touch I must say...

ISA , Danielle Deck, emailed yesterday to say they had sent out the missing magazines to me again yesterday and to let them know how long it takes to arrive...I did reply to tell them their address label was minuscule and very difficult to find against the background of the magazine.

Both TCIA and ISA April magazines arrived here on 6th May...

So, both organizations have stepped up to the plate. Follow up on your problems, allow them to help, don't just moan on a forum site!

Way to go Fiona, ISA and TCIA!

Active members are much more likely to get their dues' worth.

this was a pm

"I was on the ISA site today and decided to take the board-certified master arborist trial exam and I passed.
My question to you tonight is, are these trial test a good guide? It just seemed so easy."

7 questions do not show the breadth of topics covered; look at the list of references and get confident about your grasp before taking it. I took it 4 years ago and do not know how much it's changed since.

It's a good cert to have if you sell your opinions.
