Default Hyde Park Sydney Trees| 3 more to go

Long history of investigations and tree failures/removals.

The kindest cut sees Hyde Park lose more diseased fig trees

The kindest cut sees Hyde Park lose more diseased fig trees

THREE more of Hyde Park's grand figs will get the chop this morning, after being deemed unsafe owing to disease.

The Hyde Park Tree Management Plan, which was adopted almost three years ago, will see all the trees of Central Avenue eventually removed and replaced in a series of stages over the next few years because they are diseased and ageing.

A City of Sydney arborist, Karen Sweeney, said of the three diseases affecting the trees, the biggest problem was ''phellinus'' which, despite appearing healthy on the outside, caused the inside to decay. ''Because the tree doesn't have that internal support, it's likely to fall over,'' she said.

Seven trees have fallen over or lost branches since 2002. The council removed 22 in the avenue in 2005 and two more in 2006. ''Originally the Central Avenue had about 140 trees in it … we're left with about 101,'' she said. And as of today there will be just 98.

Only trees that are a safety threat are being removed.

The four stage project will see the trees around the Archibald Fountain, where the majority of trees have already been removed, go first, expected to begin in 2012. The trees to replace them will be about four metres tall, presumably changing the feel of the area where trees 20 metres tall now stand.

Ms Sweeney said they were leaving the central part of the avenue - ''the part that everybody loves'' - until last, scheduled for 2015. Replacement trees here should be eight or nine metres tall by the time they are planted. They are being grown at Byron Bay and on the Central Coast.

A report in 2006 showed that as many as 230 trees might need to be removed in the next 15 years.

I think that the City of Sydney approach to the management of this park and its trees is to commended, the level of public disclosure and public participation should be a model adopted elsewhere.

I don't necessarily agree entirely with every aspect of the final management plan BUT with such a wide range of issues to be taken into consideration you are never going to get universal agreement.

I do think that Karen and her team have worked very hard over the past seven years in Hyde Park and across the city, and they deserve kudos for the great many improvements they have achieved

I was in Sydney two months ago and spent a beautiful two hours snoozing under the dappled shade of the last of the leaves on an Oak there.

Seems phellinus flourishes in drought.

Even if you search the net today like this ...

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&rls=GGGL%2CGGGL%3A2009-23%2CGGGL%3Aen&q=hyde+park+tree+reports&btnG=Search&meta=cr%3DcountryAU
There's plenty of data available.

And on the councils website look at this.

Independent Arborist's Appraisal - Hyde Park - City of Sydney

In comparison to what we in Brisbane got for the New Farm Park trees this was far better.

I too think that the decisions made were not made lightly and only after thorough research was undertaken.

These trees are not structually stable and one fell starting all the investigation. When you think how lucky no one was killed when the tree fell considering, we are talking about CBD of Sydney. It prudent to remove the dangerous ones first and replant as we go.

Good work to all involved. I think todays Arborist has to be a realist when it comes to managment of our amenity trees, A time to nurture, a time to let them grow to their full extent, a time to remove them when they become dangerous. Lets face it if they were in the bush they could grow till they fall, but sadly these trees have thousands of people walking past them every day.

It doesn't have the scale and grandeur of the London original but here are some of my favourite bits of Hyde Park Sydney;

Chinese elm Ulmus parvifolia, yes very cool branch and yes....I did go and sit in it when I thought there was no-one close by to accuse me of damaging the tree or whatever....I love sitting in trees even when the limbs are close to the ground, feeling the ability of the structure to support your weight is a strange yet really pleasant.
